I live here in Astoria, Oregon and I got 5 keepers today.  It doesnt sound like alot but it only takes about 3 to equal a full belly.  I caught these from the beach using a rod, reel and a crab hawk.  If I had only known about it when I used to crab in Texas and Louisiana!

Pretty neat! Does the meat in the body cavity and claws taste like blue crab? Also do you steam or boil them and what type of seasoning?

The meat is very good and does taste similar to blue crab.  I boil them with rock salt as it tends to bring out the flavor and it tastes better than with crab boil seasoning.  This area produces tons of dungeness as well as crawfish.  I will eventually figure out the best crawfishing locations, an interesting sidenote is that technically we are on the Columbia River but close enough to the ocean to catch crab, salmon, halibut as well as sturgeon and crawfish.

Someone told my mom that once you have had Dungeness you will never want a blue crab again. I find that hard to believe but I will have to try that out sometime.

Nice catch. Enjoy.

Thanks for the report and pictures! Very nice!

The Dungeness Crab, to me, tastes More like a Stone Crab than a Blue Crab.
Due to it's larger body size there is a lot more meat in a Dungeness.
All crabs taste good.
I wish we had King Crabs walking around the bottoms here on the east coast!
We would all have to carry much bigger topless traps!

They certainly have more meat!  It's amazing how much I have been able to put in my freezer from so few crabs.

To me the taste is similar to blue crab, but it really depends how they are cooked.

When I lived in Alaska we were able to catch our own King Crab!  In the protected waters near Juneau (South of Douglas Island) you could do it relatively safely, very much unlike the waters of the Bering.   I think Snow Crab tastes the best, although I've never heard of being able to catch your own.

When I was a kid, my grandparents went down to the flea market in New Castle (or Newark) Delaware and brought me back a dungness crab. Being in the cold weather and not having crab meat for months, it tasted great to me!!!! Thats the last I had Dungness crab. Cheesy But I still wouldnt trade blue crabs for them. Cheesy

I'd have to disagree......salt water crabs  dungeness,  tanner(snow), alaska king crab,  etc....I've tasted them all,  and although they are quite yummy......blue claws live in brackish water and the meat is therefore more delicate and sweeter tasting IMHO.....just like freshwater fish have a miler taste then saltwater fish......oh my God...did I just say all that?  It sounded like something Pinchy would say.... laugh laugh laugh laugh

It really doesn't matter to me which crab you put in front of me! I like them all.  laugh However, a crab that I caught myself always tastes best. Grin

Can't imagine what it would be like to catch the larger Dungeness and or King Crab. I would probably be so thrilled I would quite and go home to cook after the very first one caught! Cheesy

I question the claim that those crabs were caught with the Crab Hawk.   It comes across a lot like an advertisement from someone whose entire body of posting is pretty much in this thread.

Case in point...

Something smells fishy, and it isn't the bait.    Grin
