i lived in oregon 6 years and kick myself in the arse every day for ever moving back here.. grew up here and love blueclaws but when you talk about taste a nd quantity dungies beat blues hands down. you fish for them with open ring nets. small ring bottom net large ring top. drop em off a pier or from my favorite place siletz bay on the incoming tide think the limit then was eight but eight dungies is like the equvilent of a bushel of blues. body cavities r full of white sweet meat and you get meat from every claw. i have caught some with npinchers as big as lobsters albiet small lobsters but nonetheless as u can tell i am a dungie guy. will retire to oregon when the time comes. dont even get me started on the fishing

When we first moved here our first stop was the fishing store. They told us our best bet from shore was to use a pole and crab hawk, my wife and I thought they were insane. So I dropped $300 on a pole and crab hawk, a crab pot, a giant ring net and some rope, floats, etc. Sure enough the crab hawk was the best at catching crabs, from shore anyhow. From a boat, crab pots are the way to go for sure. Next time I go crabbing in Texas or Louisiana I will try a crab hawk in addition to the usual ring nets we use. Crab-hawk looks like fun, but a 32" hoop net off pacifica pier can land you 3 keepers in under an hour real easy for only a fraction of the cost. I've heard the promar eclipse nets have even more success, but I don't really agree to their design. if you loose it, I can imagine they can wind up ghost fishing (er..crabbing) for a good long time.

When I crabbed for King's in Alaska I used the proper pot's, when I crabbed in Louisiana and Texas I used ring nets to catch blues and when I crabbed in Oregon/Washington I used a crab hawk. Whatever works is what I use. When in Rome... When I arrived in Oregon I promptly went to the local marine shop, Englund Marine. I wanted gear to catch crab, I bought a ring pot and a HUGE ring net. It took quite a bit of convincing by the employees to get me to try the crab hawk. I used all three types of devices and the crab hawk worked best (for crabbing from the shore). Obviously I wouldn't waste my time with one when crabbing from a boat, but as I mentioned before, I used what worked best for ME. I can understand your skepticism towards the crab hawk, but try not to spread your distaste towards something you know nothing about, lest you come across as a grumpy old man who is fearful towards anything new. I am a crabbing enthusiast and always have been, when I crab in Texas Louisiana again I will be sure to post my catch in the proper forum,. |
