Another idea to sell crab traps, one (meaning you) must look at your application and see the pros and cons of it. For some it might be the greatest thing since sliced bread (sliced bread is great for everyone without a knife ), for others it totally meaningless

Spring action door, according to the video, renders it illegal in MD.

Did anyone see a price tag on this crab trap..........also i would question if it was legal in Maryland, you do have to pull the rope to trip the trap spring,it doesn't trip automatically.
I wouldn't want to haul this size crab trap around in a boat,it would work for someone who crabs from the shore or a pier.

If you look at the picture of the trap you will see that the DOOR SPRING is a bungee which attaches at 2 point (A) to the lower section of a bi-fold door. Point (B) is a single point of attachment to the upper section of the bi-fold door.
The purpose of the Door Spring is to OPEN the upper bi-fold section by pulling it down to other section of door at hinge point (C). Without this hinge point the door would need to be large enough to close the trap opening in one piece.
If that were to be the case the angle between the attachment points (E) of the pull rope (D) would be that great closure of the door would be nearly impossible and also much slower acting.
I think because of manually pulling of the string to close the door it should be legal in MD however I would not have to carry more then one.
If you would attach line to the front 4 corners it might be possible to dredge with it.

wow 125BF,
interesting. not sure if I would use it. I think because the spring loaded door actually opens the trap door I would think it would be OK in MD since you hav to pull the rope to close the trap. I think I will stick with my existing rig... but someone who may be more alnd bound it may be of benefit....bet the price is a bit hefty though...

I like the bait tray. You could make the same bait holder for a topless trap and it might help keep bait from catfish and allow more than one crab to feed. You could also mix baits, chicken, clams, fish.

Yeah that was one thing i was wondering about was whether it was bigger than 12" x 12" on the traps footprint. Looks like it might be a bit too large....like a lot of things.. it is the gimmick... kinda like most fishing lures they actually catch fisherman not fish....

That monstrosity must cost $20. I don't see how you could reliably throw it and have it land right side up. With practice, you can throw a ring net trap or box/topless trap pretty far. The key is the little wrist flip at the end to get it upright just as it hits the water. Looks like it was designed by someone who never learned that trick.
That web site does raise an important issue that we should address here feller's. Apparently there are many mom's keeping their kids off the water over a fear of bait?!? Either they've learned how catch crabs without bait or the trap baits itself! "Moms like it because kids never have to handle the bait." Huh, what?
BF, are you going to CT or RI soon? I can't believe so many shops agreed to stock that thing. Rube Goldberg comes to mind. But hey, the guy is catching 8 crabs in 3 hrs in his tests. Talk about bailing them.

Add a wee bit more metal and one could have a real nice bullet trap........the door is so elaborate to me
