I have designed a crab-farm that can produce 1.5 million blue crabs annually.  I'm looking for venture capatilist who would be interested in being involved in this project.

I have been pondering something like that too!

But for me, it's mostly just a crazy dream.

I would probably build one in my backward.  For personal use strictly ofcourse.

What would be the measurements for such a thing?   Would it be a large pong dug into your backyard?

With over a million crabs a year.  You can eat as many crabs as you want EVERYDAY.

Ok, I did some calculations.

You said you could produce 1.5 million bluecrabs a year.

There are 52 weeks in a year.

So 1.5 million divided by 52 is little more than 28,846 crabs!!!   Divided by 7, that's a little more than 4,120 blue crabs a DAY to eat!!!!

So you could probably make a little profit too if you don't want to eat that many crabs(Yea, who could??).  Or you could just make less crabs per year.


Wow, one important question.  Is 1.5 million crabs  the TOTAL amount of crabs at the end of the year?  Or the amount produced each year to eat while still maintaining a steady crab population?

Personally, I woun't go for SO MANY crabs as 1.5 mil. I would just go for an amount that would maintain a steady crab population while letting me eat about a dozen crabs a day or less.

But please tell us how you plan on going about this?  What equipment you would need, how much room, costs etc...

That's still 4,109 crabs a day.

I hate to be pesimistic but to raise 1.5 mill crabs it's very hard unless you have a lot of experience in acuaculture, I assume you do but as far as I know the technology for Callinectes sapudis hatcheries is still under development at UMBI (University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute) and if you're planning to use the technology that already exists in japan  I'm afraid that it still is no economically convinient because survival rates under industrial conditions are not as high as laboratory conditios (such as UMBI) and you would need more than 4.5 millon larvae to get the 1.5 millon crabs you want and mantaining all those animals through 8 zoeal stages megalopae ang juveniles costs a lot of money.
I sounded too pesimistic but I'm not saying it is imposible I'm just saying "be sure before you put your life savings on your project". I wish you good luck and hope you can make it.

Due to the nature of the blue crab it does look like any large scale "crab farming" will be a ways off.  However I think that sooner or later someone or some organization will work out the kinks and it'll be a go.

Still it's hard to imagine doing it on a scale large enough to satisfy the current demand for crabs and crabmeat.

SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF CRABS BUT YOU KNOW HOW MANY EGGS THEY HAVE IF YOU FOUND A WAY TO KEEP AT LEAST 1; 100TH OF THEM ALIVE YOU CAN DO IT IN THREE YEARS STARTING WITH ONLY ONE CRAB NO?
