If the crab caught is a state record as well, we should help them get a citation and have it posted on the forum with pictures.  It would be great to also see pics of the runners-up somewhere on the forum so everyone with the question of "how big do they get?" or "what is the biggest?" can see.  The next poll should be what state has the most documented big ones.  That would really be cool.  Tongue Tongue

That would be great tuggy, you want to head that up?
As far as I can find the state of Texas does not have an official record for Blue Crab sizes and I would not have a clue as to how to go about getting the State recognize one. But if you or anyone else can line me out I am willing to give it a go.

I am not sure I understand you, if you want to withdraw your offer, I will remove it.

I  messaged you with my telephone # feel free to call me.

My intent with the prize money being each individuals responsiblity to send to the winner is this

1. to allow anyone offering to sweeten the pot to do so according to what they can afford and are willing to part with.

2. to keep this more or less unofficial, so that Bluecrab.info does not come under any laws regarding prizes or contests

3. to prevent anyone from being put in the position of handling other peoples money and possibly being accused of wrongdoing.

4. to limit any possible cries of collusion as to who is determined to be the winner and who is awarded prize money. If someone offers to put up money or merchandise to the winner it will be up to them to fulfill their word not a middleman.

All that being said, This is supposed to be be fun.
Lets not offer prizes we don't intend to give, as it will take some of the fun of it out and possibly make us look bad.
I also think there should be a $25 limit as to what any individual or entity is adding to the prize. The idea is for the prize to be an incentive, not a windfall.
However, if I win I want at least enough to buy a case of beer! Grin

I have to respectfully disagree, but also agree with the bolded. Some people may find it hard to give $25 in the economy these days, I think it should be $5 minimum because it is cheap but it add's up quick and with people who cant give $25 they might be able to pay $5. I do agree because $5 is small and if everyone payed $5 it wouldn't be much.

Just to be clear here.

Prize money being offered, is being offered by the good will of individual making the offer.
It's basically a gift, I won't dictate that beyond what I have said, that being whether cash or merchadise no individual should put up more than $25. I have no quarrel with some one offering up even a dollar to sweeten the pot, just so long as they actually follow through with giving it to the verified winner.

The only money being required to participate in this contest is the $10 that would be sent to tattoo along with your crab or carapace to verify the length of your crab.
That $10 is to compensate him for the time and effort of verifying your crabs size.
It's a nominal fee and no reasonable person should have a problem with it. I will be very surprised if there are more than 5 crabs sent to him for verification.
He was very gracious to allow me to "volunteer" him and he should be compensated.
He is also working to see that we can get a really cool trophy for this, He has one really rocking idea that I hope turns out, but I won't reveal that until we are sure it is feasible.

I drink Flying Dog's "Double Dog", Thank You!

And like I said, If I win half goes to the forum and the other half goes to buying beer.
And if there are any forum participants (over 21 of course) that would like to partake of it with me, they are welcome to come on down to Galveston and we will have some MUMBO'S & DOUBLE DOG!

Yeah Tat, maybe you could sponsor Timaeus. Then she'd be able to save her hard earned money to buy a camera, and win next years competition. Roll Eyes

MD has no citation either to the best of my knowledge, so, this would be a BCA thing in MD anyways... not sure if any other states have a citation for a crab...

Well , its an "unofficial bragging rights" contest at this point, just with the winner being pretty well documented and undisputed.

I don't want BCA to be encumbered in anyway, that's why I have been approaching it in a "looser" manner.

However, if BCA would like to endorse the contest and make it official I am open to that,
Just not sure what that would need to look like and how much involvement BCA would want me personally to have if it were to be an Official BCA Contest.

So what do you say Steve?

UnSanctioned?

Sanctioned but Unofficial?

Sanctioned and Official?

Or lets wait & see how it goes this year?

Well, I am am not a "member" and don't intend to be shoved into it.

If those that expressed those views are determined about "membership" being a requirement for the contest and are resolved to that being absolute , I will send my prize offering to tattoo for him to award as he sees fit and withdraw from participation in it.

You guys feel free to make the call.

I believe a crabber is a crabber and if a crabber catches a 10 inch crab he should be awarded for it. If anything a post count say 50 posts? or you could have to be a user of the forums for a certain amount of time so we don't have bunch of people jumping on to get the awards then jumping off.
