I have the book "Shrimps, Lobsters, and Crabs of the Atlantic Coast of the Eastern United States, Maine to Florida" by Austin B. Williams published by the Smithsonian Institution Press.
This book details many of the crab species in our area including
Callinectes bocourti
,
C. danne
,
C. exasperatus
,
C. larvatus
,
C. ornatus
,
C. sapidus
, and
C. similis
(complete with photographs).
I plan to use some of the material from this book to put together a comprehensive crab species chart for the website.

Quickly, here are the different crab species that inhabit our waters. You'll have to trust me until I can post some photos, but all of these crabs appear very similar in shape. It appears that the best way to tell them apart is to examine the abdomen.
Callinectes bocourti
- Largest male: 5.2"
Callinectes danae
- 5.4"
Callinectes exasperatus
- 5.0" (very short lateral spines)
Callinectes larvatus
- 5.5"
Callinectes ornatus
- 5.1"
Callinectes sapidus
- 8.2"
Callinectes similis
- 4.8"
I'll try to get some photos posted soon.

Actually, Dreampixels posted a link to an excellent species identification guide.

Interesting note, the maximum length listed on this page for sapidus is 227mm which if memory serves me is just a frog hair shy of 9" 15/16
It actually uses the term "exceptional" for that length. And I agree.

greetings, seems that if we catch some species, that are undersize for the regulations,we are really completely protecting that species, which is smaller than our beloved blue. thusly, more undersized and more pressure on the blue. tell me if i`m not making sense so i can increase my meds. lgc

seriously,5 species, 4 at maturity are less than 5.5 inches. they get tossed back, the blue crab goes in the basket, less blues same amount of the other species. seems like in a perfect world, the regs. would state 5.5 for blues and 4.5 for other spices. i don`t like taking dem .extra meds, makes me real slee
