I've rented a house on the soundfront and it has a dock .. I was wondering about a License I'm sure I will need that but .. If I'm renting for a week could I put in a crab pot for my grand kids to try out, so do I get it at same place where I get my fishing license ?  thanks.... |

Welcome to the BCA.. I am not sure about NC rules and regs but here in VA the owners rights convey to the renter, as far as crabbing goes. I am sure someone from down there will be along shortly with more details... Grand Kids are GREAT! |

I've rented around Avon on the soundfront and most houses with a dock or bulkhead have a crab trap that comes with the house. Call your realtor and ask them. I found handlines are more fun for the kids. They pull the pot up every five minutes and the crabs are jumping off the outside of the pot. Bait the pot around 2pm and don't touch it till sunrise, rebait and check at 2pm etc.

Just rented a house in Salvo for August 22-29. Do I need to buy the license to handline with chicken on a string and a net? I also have to ring traps (The mesh ones with three openings in them). We don't have a private dock or pier. If and when handlining can I throw one of these down for an hour w/o a license. I tried looking at the website for DMF of NC but couldn't find my answer. Also does anyone know any good spots to take the family handlining? WE used to go to the emergency ferry dock across from the Chicomonico LSS. But the last time it sucked. Not one crab.

I had a house once back in collington about 10 years ago. we caught crabs but nothing big all 4 -5 inches.... it was fun though.. had a big gar grab one of my necks and take off with it line and all. if you want crabs though will down at OBX..... I would give Gene call ..... |

I was down last year and the bait store I went to had mis led me. Seems no one really knows the rules, and the best advice I got from DNR was to call and talk to a agent, they are very helpfull and will tell you what you can and can't do. Turns out that the color of the buoy is very important and if the officer wanted to he could have written me up for hundreds of dollars. Make sure you look up Gene when you are down there he is a great guy.
