Don't worry about a patent, think Trademark, figure out a cool name, design a cool logo and trademark it all, not that expensive. So someone else may copy it and make something similar, but you'll have the ORIGINAL (insert name here) Crab Measure! 2thumbsup Wink

I just did a quick search on the cost of a patent through the U.S. Patent office web site. A minimally complicated device is $6000-$8000, that figure includes search, lawyer, and registering the item. Wow Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

If you're going into production let me offer a suggestion.

Inch rule on one side and metric rule on the other.

That way you could satisfy worldwide distribution!

Hey Mutzy,

Forget that metric [shiz]....this is the U.S. if they can't measure in inches let them figure it out. Do it our way or don't do it!!!!!!

Not only that... most stuff that you think is "original" is far from it...  if you can think up something new, chances are 500 other people thought up the same thing, or something very similar, a long time ago. Sad

I knew an old engineer once that considered himself an inventor.  He had spent a lot of time and money developing a hydrogen-fueled power cell.  He was sure he'd be a millionaire if he could patent it.  He went to the patent office, and his idea was patented 100 times over already. Undecided

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but it sounds like patents are tough to come by.

Jerry,  you just sold one by telling us who and how they were made.  My wife and I have a special needs child and firmly believe in supporting programs such as this as often as we can.  I won't have the money 'till the crabs start running, but expect to hear from me.

Couldn't help but notice, they're both open to the 10" mark. Coincidence? or is that the marketing edge. Use our measurers and catch 10" crabs. Wink
