The first pot has not been set in MD, the first line not run.  You have no idea how many crabs will be caught early in the season, yet you advertise such low prices.   Unless you have a deal with your supplier to fix the price low, (meaning the waterman gets screwed),  there is no way you can set your prices yet.  So the fix must be in, meaning the wholesaler has said that he's only going to pay x, and sell to you for y.  so when the hardworking crabber comes in with 2 bushel, the wholesaler tells him 50/ bushel take it or leave it, he takes it and goes home to hot dogs and mac and cheese.

And don't even go there telling me I don't know the expenses of selling crabs, or of catching them. I retail my own catch, so I'm well aware of both, but I don't take advantage of a forum to advertise my business.  I'm out of this one, before it goes where I don't want to go

....with all due respect Rich, the crabber doesnt have to sell his crabs to that wholesaler.
Carry on.

What does price compared to others have to do with it?  You have to compare like items in quality.  if it's the contest of who has the CHEAPEST price, I can 'put together' a bushel for ya' for $20.00.  Now go and compare that to everyone elses price.  I will win on that.  BUT, YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR..............STEAM 'EM UP AND SPICE 'EM UP and enjoy your CHEAP crabs, cuz' I will put together a bushel of she-t that I would normally discard. Mr. Ray III has been known to catch "CHEAPER" Crabs anyways............ ;DBut he makes good money doing it..And somebody has to sell cheap crabs for the guys that can't afford the high Quality, over rated quality crabs..That Cost of $150-250 dollars a bushel for quality Crabs is steep....Mr. Ray III  fills the needs,of  poor working man... True for the poor working man who wants low priced crabs, he can get them....but, if the crabs are only filled 1/4 or 1/2 with meat, and he pays say $12.00 for the dozen...he could by just 6 full crabs that sell for $24.00 a dozen (meaning he would pay $12.00 for 1/2 dozen) and have the same amount of meat for the same price.  Just less picking.  getting crabs that are only 1/2 full may leave the customer with a 'bad taste' in his mouth about the quality he bought.  He may tell his friends that the business he bought from sold him light weight crabs and they are not that good of a crab house.  It reflects poorly on the business in the end.

Also, crab retailers that are selling 'over-rated high quality crabs' for $150.00 a bushel bought them for $100.00, and after picking out the dead for the trash can, paying for the propane, spice, bag or wax-lined box, and the labor, how much profit is there for him?  Let's just say it is $30.00.  How many bushels must crab business sell a day to pay his bills?  Answer.........LOTS.

Just my 2 cents.  Roll Eyes

P.S. Crabbers and watermen should be paid a fair price for their catch which results in customers paying a fair price for their crabs.  Without crabbers crabbing, customers would have no crabs to buy.  Everything and everybody relies on the watermen/crabbers.  Without them, all crab retailers would close up shop or start selling steak-n-cheese subs.

Crabbers should be paid a very fair price for the product. In return they need to make sure they pack a good basket and cull their crabs right. Unfortunately we are seeing such big companies move crabs the quality is down. In the end this hurts the customer buying the crabs. It is easy to find a crab these days but very difficult to find a good basket. We need more small companies, coops and the like that reward the great crabbers and restore some quality.

agreed.  There are many times during the season that the price to the crabber drops but the end price to the consumer never seems to come down.  A co-op would help assure that the crabber continue's to get a fair price.   Thing that gets me is the retailer keeps his high price all season, and toward the end of summer, when crabs are plentiful, he says, "well, there not moving so I have to cut your price"  or, "don't crab tomorrow, cause I can't take 'em, I'm loaded up"  Well, DARN IT, LOWER YOUR PRICE AND THEY WILL MOVE.  Crabbers may work the water, but most are not stupid.  They realize that if the retailer cuts his price to the public, then he has to pay a lower price to the crabber, but it gets us really ticked off when the money we get for our crabs drops, but the money the public pays stays the same.

I crab commercially but I understand both sides of the coin.My buddy who is also a commercial crabber just opened up a crab house/fish market because he was tired of dealing with the wholesalers. He now has debt up to his neck. Its a very short season to turn a profit as it is for the commercial guy.If you dont like the price being offered, then dont take it.With the internet and a little advertising  its not that hard to move crab.
