Wouldn't it just be much easier to just get your own personal license and never have to worry about whether you are covered? What are we talking... $10? You drink that away in 2 hours. Every year its pages and pages and pages of people talking about the boat sticker, trying to find a way to keep 3 bushels, is my blind grandfather covered if he's with my 5 year old son who has a license... jesus... just pay the minimal fee and forget about it. Its the cheapest resource you can catch.
This is, without a doubt, the best advice that has been posted on this topic so far. I can't believe there is so much controversy over a $5 license.

I agree and view it exactly the same way.....But I must admit, I have done the same consideration for this fact and this fact alone.
Often times I will not be crabbing with the same person, most times alone, but it would be nice to some how cover the person you might take along whom may never be the same person twice.
I would not mind paying 50 bucks to do that, Yes I can buy, or have each person buy a license prior to leaving home. Since the Internet can provide immediate licensing I do just that when the urge strikes me to take someone along.

Ok, I'll put it out here in the open. I don't mind the minimal fee whatsoever, but like Dreampixels, I want the option of taking different people crabbing. These are friends and family who might only crab once or twice a year, so the cost and hassle of making sure they get a license prompted me to find this workaround.
- The boat is in my wife's name & gets a MD Boat License in her name (1 bushel for anyone using the boat).
- I get my own MD Individual crab license (1 bushel for me only).
- Whoever I take crabbing is covered by the boat license.
- My individual license + any friend (covered by boat lic) = 2 bushels
For non-resident that's $15 boat + $10 individual = $25 for me and anyone else. Good bargain & simple.
So basically think of the boat license as the "friend" license and the individual license for yourself. Just remember that one person can only hold one crab license so YOU cannot get a boat license AND an individual lic. It doesn't work that way. As long as the boat license is in someone else's name (I put the boat registration & crab lic. in my wife's name to avoid the possibility of any hassles), you can get your individual license.

Now, let the debate rage on as to whether the boat registration and boat crab license have to be in the same name. I don't see why it would, but I went the easy route. I don't see why any crabber couldn't borrow their friend's boat and get a boat license for it, which means just have your crabbing buddy get a boat license. You don't have to provide the boat registration number when you get the boat license, so you could slap that sticker on any boat.

I don't believe the controversy is so much about the $5.00 license as much as the fact that there is no clear cut answer to this and that, as I've stated before, if you ask five different DNR officals you'll more than likely get eight different answers. That's the real problem here, the incompetent running of the Department of Resources.

This past year I took 7 different people crabbing with me. 4 from Pa., 1 from N.Y., 1 from N.C., and 1 from Va. Not one of them had a problem going on line and purchasing thier Non Resident license, paying by credit card, and printing out thier $10 license. It seems to me if someone wants to go crabbing with you they should be willing to at least buy thier own license. By the way, only 1 of those people went more than once and never complained about the cost.

AMEN. We also pay for this. Call your lawyer every year to see what license to get. Don't ask about crab regulations in the regulations section of the crab forum because people will think your stupid.

I think they should charge $100 for a bay sport boat license and it comes with a crabbing boat license and allows you to take two bushels.
Individual license $125 for bay sport, and $125 for rec crab license.....
Then we would have something else to b!tch about, that was worth it to some.....
I really hope no one really gets upset about the fee's, the fee's help support the cause and in my opinion is set up incorrectly and in some case to low.
