I am very grateful to have found this crabber offering a bushel of #1 Jimmies at such a reasonable price. We were raised in Maryland and now live across the country and still want to support small operated crabbers, especially in this economy. If more crabbers offered their catch at signifcantly lower market prices rather than being greedy more folks like us would appreciate the opportunity to buy them, and alot more often. Just sayin'
If a crabber sells to a dealer for $50/basket, then how much is he supposed to sell to you for when the dealer he sells to charges $125/basket?
Undercutting each other doesn't work. Once one guy does it, the other guy looks bad for having a high price. Then they get labeled "greedy", as you call it.

You hit the nail on the head. It is greedy for commercial watermen to work to turn a profit. They should, of course, sell well below market price and work at a loss. I for one am appalled that RDwants to turn a profit in order to to care and provide for his family. Something about that entire notion seems totally un-American.
I mean, why stop at commercial watermen? I run a construction business. I guess I should sell my company's services at below market value. After all, you the consumer should get to live in a house at below market value, even if it means I don't turn a profit and can't afford to make my house payments. Tarps are cheap and there are plenty of bridges for me and my family to live under. That is assuming RD doesn't squat on that land first because his house was taken from him so he could feed you at below market value.
I mean, that is what our founding fathers had in mind when the formed our nation, right? They frowned on the free enterprise system in lieu of a socialist, barter-driven economy, right?
Oh, wait, that was the Smurfs in their Smurf village, not the United States of America.

I'll take mine whenever you want to deliver Gene. Heck at that price I might even drive half way. Gas is still high.

I see this thread has gotten way off the subject. If a crabber chooses to sell his catch significantly below market price, is honest about size and quality, he should be supported! It seems to me that the 'community' should be supportive of eachother and help eachother retail. Isn't that what it's all about? Slamming only shows a lack of character, bad karma for a new season, and poor upbringing. Personally, we know how tough times are economically so why should we put out big bucks to big online companies when we can help support a smaller family who depend on their catch as the only means of helping support their family. I sought out this website hoping to find a great bunch of watermen who supported eachother, not a bunch of slammers. It's sad if it's really come down to this and totally unamerican. I support independent decisions and we all have to look out for our own families. Leave significantly below market price alone, or better yet, support his efforts to be generous and reasonable so folks like us can have an option to purchase crabs when we wouldn't otherwise be able to afford it.

Maryland Crabs For Sale -- Significantly below market price
Maryland’s crab season opens April 1st! I will keep you updated on how I do. Buy directly from the crabber and save a significant amount of money. I will have crabs for sale every weekday and weekend for the first couple of weeks of April (depending on weather). All the crabs are caught and sold that same day, so they are the freshest available.
#1 males $100 per bushel and females $60 per bushel. I pack my bushels full, so there are approximately 7-8 dozen of #1s per bushel. The crabs in April run very heavy and are some of the best crabs of the year. I also sell crabs by the half bushel and dozen. #1 males $20 per dozen, and $12 per dozen for females.
Soft Crabs will also begin in Mid-May and the price will range from $24 to $30 per dozen (depending on size). Place your order as soon as possible. Please Call 443-858-3475 and feel free to leave a message or reply to
crabs2206@gmail.com
(I check email daily, if you need to contact me sooner, please call). We are locating on Maryland's Eastern Shore, in Snow Hill, MD.
the original post was MARCH 28, 2009
OVER TWO YEARS AGO - compare those prices to prices today/last summer and are they significantly below market two years later

Welcome to the club. We all want crabs "significantly below market price" but guess what that doesn't happen.
Oh while we are at it, I want my BAIT and FUEL "significantly below market price". Man, greedy fishermen who catch my bait and greedy gas stations...
If I got that, my crabs would be "significantly below market price".
Well here's the kicker, we all gotta make a living. You can't just run out and catch a bushel of crabs and sell them for half price. It takes alot of money to catch crabs. Think about all the expense we have....
Man some people just want it all for nothing and are clueless as to why us crabbers can't sell for cheap. Prices are already cheap.
