Last week I was attending an event in South Padre Island for the weigh in.  In that process, I met a young lady (24) and we started talking because she had graduated from the same school I did and she and her boyfriend like to fish.  The coversation turned to stone crabs.  She said that she and her boyfriend get them all the time down there.  She said that they go to a specific area and "wherever there's a clam, you will find a stone crab under it.  You just have to take a hook to dig it out and grab it."  She offered to take me and some friends to show us how to find them.  In the midst of all the action at the weigh in, I lost sight of her didn't get her contact information to take her and her friend out so that they could show me how to catch stone crabs.

Has anyone out there ever heard of such a method for getting stone crabs?

Had them in Maine.  They don't taste nearly as good as blue claws.  Might be fun to catch but to me, once you had a blue claw you can't eat any others.

Since I've never seen a live stone crab, I can't tell you if that's what they look like.  The claws certainly look like that.

Question...after catching a stone crab do you remove the claws and replace the crab in the water, or can you eat the crab too?   Thanks

Claws off and then back to the water....

The commercial Jonah Crab fishery in New England is strictly off shore.  Some are found in the shallows, but are usually pretty small.  This is a Jonah.  I have a friend who fishes commercially.  The entire catch goes to Maine where they are processed (Claws Only) and sold to places like Sam's Club, BJ's, etc.

Commonly served in the Sea Food Martini

Nice claws, the one on the right was a nice clean break but when they broke the one on the left it killed the crab.

In Texas it is one claw only, the right one.  I guess Stone Crabs are left handed?? The minimum size is 2 1/2 inch claw -- Measured from the tip claw to first joint behind the immovable claw.

Are they as nasty as a blue crab about trying to pinch everything or are they more layed back? It looks like they could put the hurt on you if they got a hold  laugh laugh laugh laugh

Anyone out there think of (or actually try) rubberbanding/duct taping one of his claws so that there's no need to worry when approaching the one free claw? I thought keeping some rubber bands/duct tape near by would serve everyone well for a trip, ya know? Oh well. Sometimes you can't be prepared for everything.
