Hey all I'm new to the site and you guys have a lot of great in-put, I fish a lot for stripers on the river, haven't caught much in the past couple of weeks and wanted to start some crabbing I'm just south of the Tappan Zee and by the looks of everyones posts from up north the crab are here!!! Can anyone advise me the size of the keepers and what they prefer for bait bunker or chicken?  Good Luck to all and enjoy the rest of the summer!!!

They'll be down your way for sure.  Bunker works well and so does perch and chicken too.  Caught 6 5inchers on coldspring pier yesterday.  Let us know how you do.

Caught my first crab today! 5.75in. I was down in Cold Spring from 6pm - 830pm. I was using chicken, that didn't go so well. A white perch got caught in my trap, I sliced his belly and hooked him to my bait line. Within 5 minutes I got my crab. I feel great! I can't wait to catch more!

Well, we put 2 of our 5 hotels in at a boat club in Peekskill using striper racks as bait. In under 24 hours 1 trap caught 5 and the second (which lost its bait) caught 2. I have not seen the crabs but my father-in-law to be tells me they were on the smallish side. Still not enough to make me get to excited just yet.

heading down to do a show in NJ again this coming weekend and will be spending a few extra days with the little lady, the canoe and some drop lines. I'll let you all know if there was an improvement from last month when I get back. Good luck all!

no secret spot... i dont want to say where is it because its been getting really crowded lately and i wouldnt want even more people there.  I dont wanna sound like an [arse] but i do usually get more than most people. I think its a good mix of the right soak time, bait, tide, the right traps and a million other little things i nit pick about.  there out right now... try south of coldspring

Hi all,

I'm new to the site but have been reading all the great reports.  I live right next to the hudson on the lower end and can tell you the crabbing here has been pretty good. Down on Edgewater, NJ , guys have been getting 30's to 40's and I have pulled 14 at night while messing around with one ring trap (including a 7 3/4 incher) but the average has been 5" to 6 1/2". Its been improving over here so you guys up north should be seeing somethng more positive up your way soon.  Smiley

Howdy all!!  Got back from LBI this past week. Crabbed the same area I was in last month from our canoe. was out there for about 2 hours with snapper heads on four drop lines. 4 keepers. 3 were the minimum 4 1/2" and one was 5" with another ton of throw-backs. Very disappointing.

Word on the overnight traps in Peekskill is picking up. 11 in one trap and 5 in another. I have not actually seen these myself as my bro-in-law has been pulling them, but he says they are getting larger. I might go tomorrow to add 2 more traps and rebait with him. Work has been busy on the boat and keeping me from crabbing myself. I want to do the cove off of Croton Point soon and see how it is. Good luck to all!

hello is anybody willing to report if the crabbing has picked up from coldspring up-wards to beacon areas yet  running down to the island is costing me alot of wear and tear on body, mind, and wallet. not the soul,no pain no gain. any info from crabby friends would be great.
