I took my course a while back and am glad I got it.  When renting boats inmost places, they had a sign up that said they would rent the boats but the license was your responsibility and they would not be held liable.  You are taking a risk if you are renting without one abd get caught.  Can ruin your whole day.

Just when did the license thing go into effect? We rented a boat out of Trixie's in Barnegat last summer and no one told us a course or license was needed, and a $500 fine??

It is news to me... however I haven't rented a boat with a motor in a couple years.  But then again, this is NJ.  I heard that saltwater fishing licenses may be coming as well.

The licensing was phased in each year since June  2005 based on the boaters age.  Theolder you were the longer you had to get you Card.    Boaters born before, 1939 were the last in June of last year.

As of June 2008 all boaters , no matter what age must have a Safe Boater Certificate, or a USCG License ( good in tidal waters only) as federal law ( weher applicable) preempts.  But you must have the ORIOGINAL license with you when challenged by State or Locals.  USCG don't care about your NJ license.

If you boat in NJ lakes you need the Card AND MUST add the boating endorsement to your Driver's License. I think it's $16 for that every DL renewal.  You must ONLY possess the DL in NJ lakes though.

The fines were $250, now they are up to $500 for 2009.

Yes, it is a Royal Pain in the A*S!.

HERE IS THE STATE POLICE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION.  Short Answer- you have a certificate to rent in NJ or the rental Place MUST provide a COURSE at time of rental with ANY kind of motor(makes it powered).

Some Rental places, "don't ask and don't policy" is going to royally screw some body big time. And it's not going to be them.  NOT YET ANYWAY.

HERE:
Capt. Frank,

Yes, a rental agency can rent any vessel to an individual without a boat safety certificate if they provide a pre-rental instruction course.

Below is the law regarding rented power vessels:

(3) a person who is 18 years of age or older may operate on the waters of this State, without having completed a boat safety course approved by the Superintendent of State Police in the Department of Law and Public Safety, a rented power vessel that is not a personal watercraft, under the following conditions:

(a) the person rents the power vessel from a business engaged in renting power vessels for use on the waters of the State;

(b) the person has successfully completed a State-approved pre-rental instruction course provided by the owner or lessor of the power vessel prior to operating the power vessel on the waters of the State; and

(c) the owner of the power vessel rental business is experienced in the operation of power vessels and has successfully completed a boat safety course approved by the Superintendent of State Police in the Department of Law and Public Safety.

You shouldn't need a boat license to rent a rowboat and motor... unless something has changed over the last year.

well now that I know, that is pretty scary.... I would rather take that 500 bucks and put it towards a boat of my own... which I have been looking for by the way  Wink   just a small one for crabbing purposes only... an inexpensive one that will hold a family of 5 safely *hint hint, if anyone knows of one*

then I guess i can contact Capt. Frank, and see what I can  do about getting a license, or instruction. or whatever.

That boat for 5 may be atall order.  My 14'7" Mirrocraft and similar aluminum boats are ideal for crabbing, but they are set up for only 4 POB's max.  You may being going more expensive fiberglass version to get that 5th person on board.

There are a number of places that do the Boating Safety courses.  The instructors make the 6 hour course interesting.  I add my 10 years of Sea Tow stories to it and explain why that rule works.  Others just read the book- like you could do yourself without them.

I teach for Coast Boating School (found on internet), but only do their Bergen/Passaic County classes.  Last night was Wayne, the next one I teach is at West Marine on Rte 17 in Lodi next Monday.  The school teaches all over the state & PA and have courses pretty much every week some where.

I'm not saying there are no other schools- there are plenty.  Try to find a good instructor someone knows of, it'll make it worth twice the money paid.  I think and have been told that I am one of the better course instructors around, because of all the good stuff I add to the course book.   My pass rate is on 750 past students is about 98% so, I must be doing OK I guess.
