I Love Crabs!

Ignore
« on: August 10, 2009, 06:59:34 PM »

Rented the row boat out of Red Bank Marina, and hit the water around 7am.  Tide was moving in, and the bite was on.  Both traps and handlines produced, on a mix of bunker, chicken backs, and hearts/gizzards.  Things tapered off as the tide maxed out, and from then on it was slow pickins.

Caught 44 - and boy, these are the biggest crabs I've seen in a long time.

The folks at the marina are fantastic.  I came back to the dock around 1pm to pick up my son.  When I went in the store, the owner (I wish I had his name) gave me a bottle of water right on the spot, seeing how worn out I was (it was incredibly hot today).  I cooled off in the store for a while before heading out again.  Only picked up another 4 on the outgoing tide.

There were a lot of fish in the water.  If I reeled in a handline without a crab, the fish would attack the bait.

Navesink is hot hot hot right now.  I recommend it, on the incoming tide if you can plan ahead.  Just park between the two bridges near the channel.

Brian

Brutally hot.  I am completely worn out from the heat.  And it's going to take me a couple hours to crack all of these crabs...

Great job!  The heat kills me, that s why I like to get out as early as I can.  I'll be out there Friday morning.  I noticed all the fish out there last Saturday.  I felt them hitting the bait as I pulled it up.  Might bring a light freswater pole to mess with them also.

I like Red Bank Marina alot. The guy is doing a great job with fair prices. My only complaints are the oar and holders are worn and bent, so you can not row well. The second thing is the anchor lines are not long enough and some anchors need to be heavier. You know the current is swift.

wife is going to hopefully take off on Friday, so looks like I will have a report for Fridays action around the red bank area... of course with my luck I will end up with my usual 10...... it just seems that everyone is hitting that place with great results.....

best spots to hit while there? (I have never been)

If you are renting from red bank marina just row over to the steel bridge and anchor up about 10 yards from the first opening see photo.

quick question regarding the rentals at RED BANK MARINA --- does anyone know if you require a license to rent the electric motor boats?

and i'm fairly new to the whole crabbing scene -- what exactly is the technique of handlining? i usually go crabbing out in captree in long island and all i use is a long net and scoop the buggers out of the water when they float by.

thanks for your replies!

I called, and for the electric motors: No, you do not need a license... for a gas powered you would need it.

here is a reply from them directly that I found on another site:
"The only boat here that requires a boating certificate is the gas motor boat and the cost to rent that for the day is $125.00.
We also have electric motor boats that are $80.00 for the day and row boats that are $50.00 for the day. Those two do not require you to hold a certificate.
Thanks again for your interest in our business, If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
The Crew at Red Bank Marina"

I will be there on Friday, so don't take my boat  Cheesy

Handlining is fun and easy.  I just tie a 1 or 2 ounce singer on the end of a string with a chicken neck and send it to the bottom.  Lift it up slowly to see if it's heavier and if it is, you will prob feel the crab chewing on the bait.  Then just pull it up slow and net it before it gets to the surface.  I catch more with handlines than with traps.

Aciffer thanks for the report man. Hopefully i'll be making it back out on the last sunday of this month with the family.

Made some crab scampi over rice yesterday.  Today, it's flounder stuffed with crabmeat, and some big stuffed mushrooms.  That uses up all the crabmeat - I need to get out again... might take a friday off one more time.

You shouldn't need a boat license to rent a rowboat and motor... unless something has changed over the last year.

For gas you need a boater safety license, not sure if it applies to electric.  They usually dont check you at the dock to rent it but if you are caught on the water a ticket you will be a gettin!

ANY powered boat needs a licensed operator in NJ. There is no difference in electric or gasolene in NJ.   The fine is up to $500 if you get caught.  The rental place is supposed to give you a 45 minute course ( yeah right) if you do not have a Boating Safety License in NJ, or they can not rent the boat to you.

I am a certifed (paid money for a card& fingerprinted beside USCG License)NJ Boating Safety Instructor in NJ.  Or you can call the NJSP Trooper Rich Brown in the Marine Division in Trenton.

The last time I was down in that area the NJSP boat was by Oyster Point visiting with a few boaters two weeks ago.

Bottom line- you're rolling the dice.   That rental guy is dead wrong on what you need.    Ask an online question at the NJSP website.  You WILL SEE.  Smiley

That's what I thought too.  Last time I went out on the Barnegat the guy said the same thing to me, as long as I signed all the forms I was good.  I have the saftey cert and license for non-tidal waters but was still shocked when he said it didn't matter.  Interesting the places keep giving out boats to non-certified boaters.

If you contact Trooper Brown he can help you out with anything you need.  I took the course back in the early 90's and Rich was able to pull my record and get me an updated card.  Here's the number for those who may have questions, (609) 882-2000 X6170.
