I went there today, to check it out and go crabbing.

www (dot) chesapeake (dot) va (dot ) us/services/depart/park-rec/greatbridgelockpark.shtml

(can't post hyperlink, So put a dot between www and Chesapeake and va and us. )

I was hoping a pier would be there, but wasn't - as I mostly have ring handlines. And a trap I recently got, just to toss in while I'm there Smiley

It was extremely slow and got a dozen over more hours than I care to admit -- but at least there is concrete walls along the shore, and can drop them - but wasn't good crabbing. Wire ones would have been much better as some kept getting snagged and frayed.  It might have been an off day, spoke a while with an old-timer there - who said he comes there a lot and said it was slow. I stayed through before high tide to low.   Also occasionally fished - but that too often got snagged, after I cut my line twice after no nibbles stopped that. No one near me caught fish entire time, except two small spot.  I caught a baby flounder in my ring trap.

Anyone know of any good free piers with good crabbing? (Hampton roads) I found one I like in Newport news been to 3-4 times, but a bit of a drive.   Other place that was "reputed" to be good with crabbing is first landing park - and is all shore-crabbing. (or boats on water of course)  I was worried about wading out too deep, current was strong - and my net traps wouldn't cut it there anyway.  Would be good for boaters, though ---- as I did see commercial crabbers come through a lot, or at least, guys with 30+ traps on boat, busy sorting as they passed by.

Portsmouth city park was also recommended. I went there - no fishing or crabbing allowed in the park. (lol)   I did see two people crabbing there when I visited, watched them a few minutes, talked with them about the "no fishing/no crabbing/no alcohol in park sign" and as I walked away they got a ticket. lol.

Anyone know some good areas? For free piers, to primarily crab, but also saltwater fish?

Edit: Hmm, maybe I should have posted in resources? but also a report Smiley

I haven't crabbed at the locks yet but was wondering where a good spot to go?  Should I stick close to the locks themselves or back toward the bridge?  And when you say Canal side, is that the North or South side of the water way?  I road through there today to scope it out and ran into one guy.  He said he'd been there all day and got about a dozen.  He had lines out near the locks, and on the other side of the road facing the condos.  At least I think they were condos...  I was hoping to get out there this Saturday and was trying to get there early morning around 7 or 8.  What would you recommend?

I was between the bridge and the lock - not at the boat launch area or the marina side.

I did stop and talk with guys crabbing near boat launch area, they were using handlines /net. And wasn't good for them - they said better crabbing where the old guy was, so went there and talked with him awhile. After he left, I crabbed there - he had it pretty crabbed out from the shore, about 20 of them.

The newport news place has always been better than that Smiley

Can you give an address for the pier or exact name of the park so I can search on it. It is far from me, but might check it out.

Is it blackwater park at
5247 N River Rd
North, VA 23128

I went here again yesterday (GB Lock Park). And made me regret it.

I recently got wire ring traps and some stakes, that I wanted before going back and more string.

I planted 5 wire ring hand traps right at the lock, to bridge. Put a crab trap there too.

I put  5 string ring traps further down.

I put 5 ring string traps on marinia side.

I put 2 handlines (net scap) that I moved a few times. , but between the marina ones on and lock ones.

I also fished ocassionally. (No nibbles).

I was there for 8 hours. Trap caught illegals when I pulled it up. . And I still mostly threw back illegals. I got 11 keepers, but all of them were pretty small sooks and two barely legal jimmys.  I kept them this time, but again feel cheated.

This is NOT a good spot, sorry. Monitor overlook pier is a zillion times better. But can be bad, but not as bad as there.   Unless i'm the most unluckiest person ever.  And everyone around me too.

Went again.  (Glutton for punishment, but at least it's close)

Caught about 6 on small fish as bait, none on chicken.

Those around me did a little better, they were using fishing rods as handlines, maybe a dozen at best - and again, mine were barely legals, threw back alot, others were illegals.  Most of what others caught were illegal.

They did say a game warden came through and give people tickets. Fun for getting out and doing something, but I gave away all my keepers again.  They were happy, easier to catch from my cooler than the water, that's for sure.

Again, it explains things perfectly.

From how bad it is - to you saying great.    Try it from the park sometime, it's pretty awful.

And they still look small to me, but hard to tell for sure.  Especially first picture.

newport news I guess my place to go, as I mentioned before, got a near bushel there once (from a pier with handlines) but even a bad day, is better than a good one at GB Loch (Though, at least it's closer) and commercial crab pots all over the place.

Wouldn't think of a pier, or a park, if I had a boat.
