Thanks, that was a good read. Pretty much had heard most of that throughout the years. One interesting fact was the holding of its breath while backing out the old shell, that was something I've never heard before.

Cute article but didn't answer any of the real questions, I wanted answered::::::

1- do crabs fart
2- can crabs blink one eye
3- do crabs close their eyes when they sleep
4- how do crabs kiss when they're having sex
5- do crabs have a tongue
6- what's that furry stuff on the bottom of some crabs

The Department of Natural Resourcs says the largest crab ever caught was 9 inches, by a waterman in Eastern Bay near Kent Island. A carved model of that super-duper-jumbo is on display at Mr. B's Seafood on State Street in Stevensville. The staff there, however, says the crab, caught in 1980, actually measures in at 10 5/8 inches. DNR biologists say they sometimes see 10-inch and 11-inch crabs turn up in their surveys.

Just like the crab population is up 50% this year?

3. It's proteins that cause a crab to turn from blue-gray to red when cooked.

The proteins that give the blue crab its blue tint coagulate when exposed to heat, Davis said. That causes the shell to turn red. It's similar to when an egg white turns from a clearish color to solid white when it cooks.

This is not exactly true.  The different pigments in the crabs exoskeleton are all destroyed by the heat except the red pigment.  that's why the crab turns red, red is the only color left

I guess I was nit picking, but the use of the word "coagulate" is incorrect.  The color pigments are destroyed, not blended together, by the heat.  Doesn't really matter though, how it happens.  They turn red when they are cooked
