2009 Recreational Summer Flounder Fishery Closes
Annapolis, Md. – The recreational summer flounder fishery in Maryland state waters will close at 11:59 p.m. on September 13, 2009.
"DNR has worked closely with coastal fisheries management partners and Maryland anglers to rebuild the stock by 2013,” said DNR Fisheries Director Tom O’Connell. “These efforts will ensure that Maryland can provide quality fishing opportunities to our anglers.”
In the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, anglers may keep one summer flounder per person per day, minimum of 16 1/2 inches in total length. In Maryland’s Coastal Bays and in the state waters of the Atlantic, anglers may keep three summer flounder per person per day, with a minimum size limit of 18 inches.
Maryland is working with its management partners and the federal Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) to better estimate the summer flounder harvest in Maryland.
Anglers are encouraged to participate in the summer flounder volunteer angler survey. To participate in the survey, please visit

Everyone's(VA,MA,RIetc) fluke season is closed or being closed
. The citizen is really taking a screwing on his fluke season from the feds
(the states just do what uncle sam tells them to do
).

Couldn't they have scheduled the tournament a week earlier?

That's because your state agreed to a min. keeper fluke size equal to the size of a small halibut. Like I said the feds tell them what to do and they do it. They get given options.....thats it. The states have no sovereignty over their fisheries. Our rec. fluke season lasted about a month thanks to the ASMFC. Just for once I would like to see some state grow some balls and tell the Fed. to piss off! and we are going to do it our way.

I guess the flounder fishery is in recovery though. From reading the DNR fishing reports I'd think I'd catch two before my bait hit the bottom. Funny how they start closing the fishery now that there's enough to go around... guess it just means more for next year

In NJ we will once again be over quota for fluke. This means once again a shorter season and a raised size and lower bag limit. How can we have one of the best seasons in years and get pummelled with further restrictions.

Trouble is they are allways managing the fisheries using indices that are 4-5 years behind whats really going on.Maybe there's no other way I don't know......but I know they going to have to change things in my state so the rec. guy can get a fair shot at the resource.
