My neighbor went crabbing Saturday the 5th. Put over at Rolphs about 5:00 or 5:15. Headed to Southeast creek .He and his buddy started to put traps over. This was sometime before 6:00 or 6:07 . Shortly thereafter "The Man" showed up and said," you boys a tad early ain't ya"Huh?
My man says ,,,I ain't pulln' no traps yet"! "The Man" says,,,"the book reads,,,"Can't  SET no crabbing gear before 1/2 hour before sunrise"!
So a word to the wise,,,,,best be do'n the right thing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
BTW ...forgot to mention. That little diddy cost hiM $125.00 !

Good.  Wish they would get a bunch more of them like that and then maybe there wouldn't be so many out there illegally setting before the proper time.  Maybe they should raise the fine a little more like double it.  Send a real message.  Wink

Crabshack,,,,,,I tried sending you a PM concerning what you asked me! However your mail box is full.
When I wrote this note I was sure Sunrise on Saturday was 6:37 . I may be wrong since I didn't look it up. I knew Sunday was 6:38 since I did look that up cause I wanted to crab on Sunday. That would have made legal crabbing time on Saturday around 6:07. The two fellas I was writing about were way ahead of  6:00. My point was trying to show that following the rules was the way to go.

$125 aint too much if you do it for years and never get caught...I might start an hour or so early from now on to get a jump on things...play the dnr lottery so to say....lol   whats the chances of dnr being out of bed at 3 am.

They don't need to be out of bed at 3:00 AM, they just need to be on the river where you're crabbing 10 minutes before legal start time laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

I attended a DNR meeting last night. Had the privilege of having three NRP people at my table (2 lieutenants and a Sargent) They received cell phone calls the whole time.(you couldn't help hear some of their conversation). Evidently there was a sting getting ready to happen.

Word's I overheard, included "night vision equipment, take plenty of ticket books."

In short. Good luck with your attempt to break the law, I'm sure Maryland's Governor will have a big grin on his face when he deposits your contribution to Maryland's treasury.

BTW. There are plans to increase the fine for starting early for both user groups.

the chances are real good... you just don't know when, but they'll be out there, and round up everyone.  And even if you're joking with your statement, you might not want to post stuff like that on this board... you have no idea who is reading it, and where something might end up.

The man was only  fined $125.00.....If you can afford a boat, license, bait, gear, gas for truck, gas for boat....and catch bushels and bushels of crabs every year......that fine is nothing compared to that....Thats all I'm sayin' ....if you are crabbing 10 minutes before you may as well crab all night...DNR is never out late. They give everyone a chance to get crabs in the boat and then they come out..I see it all the time.I have never seen one in the middle of the night.

If they catch you at sunrise with a half bushel and you try to explain your way out of it, you better believe that they're gonna shake you down for every violation they can think of.

If you did that, there would be evidence on board, i.e. strings with bait tied to them and the tell tale dip net. I think you missed the point.

I have no desire to get up that early...so I'll never face this possibility~

However, I do agree with the fine.  $125.00 takes a chunk out of your wallet, and it just tees you off to have to pay such fines, but I'll bet they never do it again.

I agree with the handlining....get out there, if you want to go out that early...sit and wait until the proper time, but in the meantime, you could handline.  I THINK!!!
