Crab'n is a way of life....

There are a few of us on the BCA that have crabbed using the VA 5 pot rec license.  It was dropped last season as part of the VMRC's attempt to bolster the failing crab population in the Chesapeake Bay.  It is my understanding that if and when the WDS data indicated that the population was above 200 million the 5 pot license would be reinstated.  The VMRC board is going to revisit this law in May.  To me that indicates that they might already know the count is above 200 million mark.  Please take the time to send Jack Travelstead Jack.Travelstead@mrc.virginia.gov a email asking them to stick with the law that the VMRC passed last year.  To reinstate the 5 pot license if in fact the count is above the mark.  Thanks, Jack

I don't know how I feel about that.  If it is a fact that dredging kills more then are harvested in sellable condition, and that it is mostly she crabs, then it doesn't make sense to me.

I do support the lifting of the ban on the reduce number of pots for commercial crabbers tho.  I also believe that there should be quotas on everybody.  That is the only thing I think could be enforced.  Just have a officier stand at the dock and count baskets.  Over the limit, ticket and dump the catch over board. 2 tickets your done for the season. I would like to see something like, 1 bushel/per week for recs. I don't know how you could enforce this tho.  If a rec needs more for a gathering then buy them.

IMO, the 5 pot license should be restricted to 2 per household.  Also raise the cost from 37 bucks to maybe a 100 bucks. Just MO...

PS: Oh Yeah, and no females for recs...

Only if you are all in the boat... I crab alone and can not get enough for a cookpot with just 2...  Undecided I used to be against the Sunday thing but now understand the reason, if there is any reason to Government actions, is to keep Commies from getting a 5 pot license for everyone in thier family.  And then using them, the licenses, to run the lines on Sunday...  Sad

I never understood why VA allowed a winter dredge season as  most seafood has a season and to pull crabs out of the mud during the winter makes no sense to me and never will.JMO

As all the articals state,it has been going on for over 100 years at times with over 300 boats and they couldn't catch them all or even put a dent in the fishery.

Jack there are plenty of sooks,it's the big breeders that are going down hill everywhere. I understand that it is about a 20 percent loss on dredged crabs,I have never liked that fishery either BUT those few oldtimers left should be allowed to fish out the few years they have left with bushel limits and maybe a shorter season if need be.I do support giving them a life time non-transfurable license and when the license holder retires or dies then so does the license.

I'll second that and question the softshell clamming fishery in the Chesapeake Bay.   Dredging crabs and softshell clams both damage underwater structure..

A person with a commercial fishing -crabbing license is not a Commie.

A lot of people who hold commercial fishing licenses served honorably in the Army, Navy or Marines and fought in the Korean or Vietnamese wars against the communists or commies.

Since I'm both a vet (2 tours Vietnam) and a commercial fishermen, I resent being called a "commie".
