I've been shooting a hand me down bear achery bow for about a year now and I just took my hunters safety course online in the spring So this year was the first year I've been deer hunting. I live with two friends of mine who are both avid hunters and they've really gotten me into it. So last tuesday I headed out, drizzle and all to sit in a climber my friend had let me borrow for the year on some private land my parents own, but have never hunted. I hunted got in the woods around three and sat around not seeing anything for a few hours until I got to the point where I thought I'd never see anything, and suddenly this deer walks out into the clearing. First deer I've ever seen at this spot after five days of hunting and seeing massive scrapes and rubs as well as a lack of corn. He came right out of the woods perfectly broadside and I got a good shot. I called everyone saying I shot a six pointer! come help me look. So We get the big lights and bloods lights and find a good bit of blood on a tree and start following drips and they stop bluntly after about thirty yards. So we look for about two hours and call it quits. We lose the blood trail. Came back the next morning to find not a single drop of blood we had seen the night before. Walked the entire woods and couldn't find the deer. Went to class and one of my friends that helped me look mentioned maybe he swam across the pond (probly about 80 yards across) to the other side. So we go look and can't find him. This is the next afternoon. Still nothing. He leaves and I'm paddling the kayak back across about to head home when what do you know. I see something floating. Pulled This deer out of the pond with a kayak and went waist deep in mud to get him on shore. 140 class 9 pointer. I'm still pretty bummed the meat went bad, but I took him to the taxidermist. Not to bad for a first deer if I do say so myself.

nice job !! nothing like a big one for the first deer......And you also learned the lesson of deer going to water when they get hit...it will help you later in all your future hunts.at least you got him..theres always meat but not always a huge heavy rack along with it..

Nice buck, Congraduation on your first buck. But I must ask did you get it during muzzleloading season, eventhough you hunting with a bow, You still have to follow the season that was doe only week.

Crabbingguy,
I could be wrong, but I believe the doe only BP season is a special season, and you are allowed to harvest bucks with a bow.

Quote
Special Regulation for Oct 26 – 31, 2009 and Nov 14, 2009:
(1) Bowhunters must wear fluorescent orange; (2) Any deer taken with a bow on these dates must count towards the Bow Season Bag Limits.
Nice job, kid.
Bigger than anything I have shot, and I've been at it along time.

The guy above me is correct. The handbook given to all hunters in maryland places this date into two sections. A doe only blackpowder date AND an antlered and antlerless date for bow. I couldn't have taken this deer with a BP rifle (luckily there isn't enough land where I hunt to shoot one or I would've been SOL and had to let him walk away), but it is legal with a bow.

the hunting was probably easy if no one hunted the property prior to you.  it is like fishing a pond that no one has fished. way to go thick rack.
