Officials: Patapsco River contact dangerous after sewage spill
Officials are warning people to avoid the Patapsco River after a massive sewage spill in the Halethorpe area.
About 22 million gallons of diluted sewage streamed into the river over 10 hours beginning Saturday evening, according to the Baltimore County public works department.
Heavy rains and melting snow flooded a Halethorpe sewage pumping station under renovation and triggered the overflow which was staunched this morning, according to a statement from the public works department.
Residents should avoid the river until further notice.

Shoot, that sewage spill is nothing compared to the trash that washes down from the Jones Falls, and all of the hazardous waste from the industries that dot the Patapsco waterline.

the patapsco river was a giant sewer pit way before the sewage spill, just look at what the bethlehem steel pumped into it for 75 yrs.

The real crime is that the State or a County can dump 22 MILLION gallons of sewage in 10 hours into the Bay WITHOUT ANY CONSEQUENCES. Individual home owners with septic systems are getting hosed $30 a year just because they exist and the State can screw them!

I'm just pointing out that the REAL polluters walk away unscathed - while the peons take the hit financially so the do-gooders can say they're making a difference. As far as what I'm doing about it - I VOTE every election.

Baltimore County's Department of Public Works is warning residents to avoid contact with the Patapsco River after 30 million gallons of diluted sewage overflowed into the waterway during the weekend.
A dozen pumps at the Patapsco Pumping Station, which is undergoing renovation, were shut down Saturday afternoon to protect them from damage after the melting snow and heavy rain raised water levels, said David Fidler, department spokesman. With nowhere to go, the diluted sewage spilled into the river over a 20-hour period.
By early Sunday afternoon, most of the pumps were running again and the sewage overflow had stopped, Fidler said.
The department advises residents to avoid the Patapsco downriver from the pumping station at 4612 Annapolis Road in Halethorpe.
