Hi there all. I just want to know if the blue crab (Porutunus pelagicus) that we find in sea, can live and grow in freshwater?
Thanks

The blue crab that most of us are familiar with is Callinectes sapidus

Welcome to the BCA. What's the weather like in Cyprus?
Just like here, only the sun comes up earlier. Was watching the Australian Open last night when Bahgdattis(sp) I know I totally butchered that name up, was beating Federer pretty good. What does this happen to do with Cyprus you ask? "B" is from Cyprus. Funny how those things come about. Oh yeah good luck with your crab. I'd try to mix a little fresh in with the salt water. Every so often add a little more fresh than before till you get to all fresh.

If it takes a chicken and a half a day and a half to lay an egg and a half, how long would it take for a squirrel with a wodden leg to kick the seeds out of a dill pickle? Think about it, or not.

Looks big enough to eat. I'd say try it and find out, but I think he's more interested in keeping it alive. Maybe just till it sloughs, then he'll have a nice softie to fry up in butter. Mmmmmmmmmm.

I did not know you could keep blue crabs alive for months in a fresh water tank. How long do you need to change the water out to keep the salt water and fresh water balanced before they will live in fresh water alone? I have a 120 to 140 gallon fish tank that had guppies and all those small fish in it. Then I got tired of them and put some blue gills and a cat fish in the tank. The blue gills ate all the Guppies and my wife was a little upset but I didn't really care for them that much anyway. I am going to catch a few more fish from the local reservoirs and stock my fish tank. I would love to have a blue crab in there. That would amaze my friends to see a blue crab in fresh water. Does a fresh water soft crab tast different then one caught in saltwater? If no one knows the answer I might have to find that out. Tat how much do you charge for mounting a crab on a bushel basket lid? I have always liked how that looks and would like to have one done if I ever catch that 9 inch crab.

What i want to do is to grow them. In order to do that i must make them live in freshwater since i have some facility for that. Here no one eat them and there are some specimens found at sea.So i will harvest them and grow them if they get big.

I thought I read somewhere they could live in freshwater, but could only reproduce in salt water.
