I know our blue crabs can live in fresh water. I kept one in my tank for a few weeks, but he came out of the  brackish water in the river. As I'm sure you know Pelagicus means it lives in the ocean,so he might not be as receptive to a fresh water tank.  Give it a try see how he makes out.

Nicnicaqua-
I see you are from Cyprus. My youngest daughter is in Cyprus for a semester abroad - she arrived on January 21st. So far she loves it and enjoys the food and culture. We live in Maryland and she goes to college in North Carolina and decided to study at the University of Nicoscia this spring. She is a crab lover and eats them with me all summer. Can you get crabs to eat in Cyprus, either live or at a restaurant? I will let her know. Do you live near Nicoscia? She and her 3 roommates are going to Egypt for a long weekend next week. Write me back or send me a private email. Love to learn more about Cyprus, and things I can relate to my daughter!

Tbird,
If they are headed to Cairo, make sure she checks with the state depts. website for travel advisories.
Its probably wise to stay with a large tour group instead of doing a self guided tour.
I havent been there for fifteen years, but our group hired a local guide. Saw the Cairo museum and went into the queens chamber in the Great Pyramid at Giza, which is just outside the city along with the Sphinx and two other pryramids.
Tell her to see the Great Pyramid at night the first time. They have a free show complete with lights and loudspeakers. Pretty awe inspiring to see it for the first time as it appears out of the dark sky when the lights hit it during the show.
Put in your order for an eighteen carat gold Kartouch with your wifes name in egyptian heiroglyphics. Pretty neat.
The only problem I had with Egypt is the smell. Eau de Camel Dung. Grin

If you want to read a really good book about the Maryland Blue Crab, you should check out "Beutiful Swimmers."  It is an old book, but it has a lot of good info about the blue crab in it.

I have blue crabs in my pond for several years after a hurricane. They get really big but dont re-produce. I've eve caught crabs as far as  60 miles inland, but that was in the river.

Nicnicaqua, if you have a tank you could make it saltwater just get a protein skimmer and put lots of macro algae (see grasses) in it once you get it up and running in should take care of it self you may have to do small water changes biweekly. just look into saltwater fish tanks.I had a small one they are not to hard to keep.

They must have some tolerance of the freshwater enviroment?
Heck I have caught them in river systems at low tide when it was pretty much just freshwater?

that looks like the asian blue swimmer crab that phillips has packing plants for overseas. if it is than thats what your eating when you dine at any phillips reasterant on but thier canned crabmeat.
Chinese crab.  They have practically no flavor at all.  Got to smother them in Old Bay just to TRY and pretend they taste like Blue Crab.   Not just Phillips, but a TON of restaurants are doing this and trying to pass it off as Blue Crab. :/  Hard to find a restaurant that serves the real stuff these day cause the other is so much cheaper and MOST folks don't know the difference.  I can tell as soon as I bite into it, as most of the people on here can.
