Does anyone here paint the wire frame when making they're traps or pots to help prevent rust?  Do you think it will keep crabs away from the traps/pots or no change?

Black would be the color I'd do because the doors are vinyl coated black, I just wanted to know if anyone thinks the paint would keep the crabs away from the trap.  Like if any scent was to come off it.

if you have vinyl coated traps not sure how good the paint will adhere to them... I do know that with new shiny galvanized traps they don't work as well till they get greyed out and more galvanized looking...they greyer and dull they are the better they work catching IMHO...

Not to the actual vinyl itself. I'm talking about the galvanized frame of the trap because after the last few years they got rusted so I'm replacing tHe frames and want them to last longer.

throw a sacrificial zinc anode on there just make sure it's touching the bare frame if you're really worried about them rusting out.  the paint should help, but any scratch'll expose the metal again and start the rust up so it may be a useless endeavor.  an alternative could be some vinyl coating or something that's harder to scratch off.  If you want to go really hardcore you could have the frames powdercoated, but that's probably beyond the realm of cost vs benefit

I found an old rusty trap in the water last summer. I painted it up all nice and never caught a crab in it.(3 or 4 trips) Maybe a coincidence, maybe not. Maybe shoulda used Dutch Boy. Roll Eyes

After I grind some of the sharp edges off my traps, I spray with the "galvanize" spray paint on the ground off edges...keeps the bare metal from rusting and seems to do it well !!! Wink
