"By Linda Cicoira Eastern Shore Post
When the new 3/4-mile bridge
to Chincoteague opens next week,
it will be without the anticipated
fanfare. At least that was the report
at presstime Thursday.
There won’t be a ribbon cutting.
No one wanted to accept liability
so that people could walk
the facility before it opens to automobile
traffic.
Town Manager Robert Ritter
said the bridge would open Tuesday
or Wednesday, “depending on the
weather. They’re just going to open
it when they get the opportunity.”
“Our thoughts were what’s the
point (of having a grand opening
on Friday, April 2) if people are
already driving on it.”
According to Ritter, the construction
company said it would
not oppose opening the bridge for
two hours on Monday if the Virginia
Department of Transportation
(VDOT) would accept liability
during that time, but VDOT
would not do it.
Tom Rakowski of VDOT said
agency and town representatives
will meet at 10 a.m. today to further
discuss the options. “The
town is going to be in complete
control,” he said.
A spokesperson for VDOT said
the contractor would be off on
Good Friday when VDOT takes
possession of the bridge at 12:01
a.m. “We are trying to determine
if it will be open Thursday or Friday,”
she said, adding that until
the connector bridge being built to
Marsh Island is completed, VDOT
does not consider the job finished.
The two existing bridges that
this project will replace were
built in 1939 and 1940."
