Blue Crab Trap Area Closure Set to End

The harvest of blue crabs from traps in all waters of Broward through Pasco counties will reopen on July 20.  The use of traps to capture blue crabs was prohibited for a 10-day period in this area so lost and abandoned traps that remained in coastal and inland waters could be identified and removed.

Six regional 10-day blue crab trap closures take place in Florida at different times during the year, including a 10-day closure which begins on July 20 in the waters of Hernando through Wakulla counties, including all waters of the Ochlockonee River and Bay.

More information regarding the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s trap retrieval program, blue-crab trap closure dates, regulations and how you can participate in cleanup events is available online at http://www.myfwc.com/RULESANDREGS/SaltwaterTraps_index.htm .

Sure wish we could do something about this ten day ghost hunt. last year down here some of the fisherman  never even took out there traps.who decided on july anyway looks like they would have done it in january or december. guess that would make too much sense.

I liked the winter time to until we did it last year,it worked perfect as we got to clean and tag the traps on the hill instead of trying to do it on the water, after July 4th you can't hardly give a crab away anyway and doing the retrieval we had good tides to clean up with.

To make your day, because of the oil coming I requested to lift the closings for this year 2 weeks ago and got conformation today at the end of the FWC meeting that it is a done deal,No 10 day closure for this year. When it does resume in the future I would not count on leaving gear out as we will be doing only 3 regions a year so somebody will be retrieving in every area for the 10 days, for every trap found over 5 the FWC acesses a $10 per trap fee that has to be paid before you can renew licenses or get tags for the following year.

It's a good program. Got a lot of [curd] out of Citrus Co. waters last year.
