Looking at the photo of Gene's pots, it makes me sad to know I have three such pots under my back deck, but that its illegal to use them as a recreational crabber.  Terrible law.

Yea, From my understanding ( I called DMF in NC ) You cannot use those traps or any type of box trap and leave them un-attended  unless you have a Commercial license. The smaller traps like we use here in MD ( small 2 or 4 door box traps ) are illegal to use if you leave them for any period of time. But if you use them and keep them tied to the boat or to a dock or pier they are legal to use. You can tie 1 commercial grade trap to a "Private pier" just like up here.

Like i said this all came from a DMF field officer from the Topsail Island area. I had some box traps i wanted to take down but could not find a clear definition on there web site as to what was legal or illegal. All it told you were the crab sizes .... So I called them. At first the officer had me confused but after a short talk he realised i was talking about small square pots, not the larger ones like gene shows in his pics. They also sell them in some of the bait and tackle shops down that way! They also said the same thing, do not leave them in the water un-attended. If you do you will get a hefty fine!

I believe you can set 5 of the commercial style pots if you have a Rec. License...You might want to recheck with NCDMF.....
