I know what you guys mean. I started helping my grandfather when i was 10 or so. now i'd like to get a rig of my own but its a joke with prices like that

It's not a joke,if you want to crab and fish commercialy then it's part of the investment,if you just want to run out and play when the catching is good then the price helps slow that down.

I bought My license way cheaper than that before the buy back of Virginia . If you sell it back to the state then your just as sorry as they are. You should at least sell it to someone that will use it and not fall prey to the Political killers of commercial watermen. If you care about the future of the commercial watermen then sell it reasonable and don't try to get rich over night.
