I fished at North East park this evening. On my first cast ( using night crawlers ) i caught a 2 - 3lb blue fish....Kinda. I got him up to the floating boat dock when he spit the small hook i was using. I was expecting to catch some small cats and white perch so I was using #5 red hooks.  I must not have had him hooked well because as soon as he got some slack he got off! I was shocked to say the least to see a blue fish this far north.... Are the common up here in the summer ? Or do you all think he was a stray that came up with the Rock fish when they were spawning ? I was also thinking that with the lack of rain in the past few months maybe the water salinity level is up??? None the less it was a fun little fight and a shock when i seen him and realized it was not a bass lol Maybe this is a good sign for crabbing in the upper bay region this year!

I don't fish much past the Bay bridge. I'm sure if it is on the bay a blue could be there.

Im wondering if it was something other then a blue fish. That far up the bay seems awfully early for it to be a Blue. I've caught them later in the year in the Sass but the Northeast is way up there. It may have been though. That far up they are usually small snappers blues anyways. The bigger ones don't go much further north then the Bay Bridge.

It was Def. a blue. I have caught alot of them over the years and got a great look at this one. He was about 2 1/2 pounds. He looked very healthy and put up once heck of a fight. I wish i would have landed him, I have a camera phone and would have loved to of gotten a pic of him with the naughty goose in the back ground lol I just do not think i had him hooked well since they were so small. I thought I had a very nice bass on the line, He fought harder than the bass i have caught there including a 4 1/2lber i caught there last year. I am just frustrated he got off! Would have been great to get some pics! My best guess is that he made his way in with the Rock fish when they spawned and just stuck around or "got lost"

I don't think he would have come up with the spawners because bluefish generally don't tolerate the cooler temps/lower salinty when the stripers spawn on the flats. It may have just worked it's way up the bay recently. I fished near Kent Island and haven't seen many yet. Just small snapper blues. Anything is possible though. They are fine eating! Smoked  Grin

One of the best fighting fish out there IMO, wait till you catch one 10+ pounds, but youll have to be closer to the ocean for that.

Used to catch 10+ ones at the BB years ago around April/May.  Then one year they stopped coming into the Bay.  I don't think anyone knows why.

Those are some big blue fish. I see you got citations for them. I could have gotten citations on many fish over the years i just never take them in. I caught a 14 1/2in white perch last year that i believe would have been the state record. I caught it on a rattletrap while i was casting for schooling stripers. Biggest one i've ever seen.

Back to the bluefish, they usually get pretty thick in Eastern Bay in the late summer. Got a few last year around the 20-25in mark. 5-7lbs

Biggest blue fish I had were 33 and 32 inches. Both in the 10 pound range. Fun fish to catch.

I am currently vacationing at Topsail Island NC and I have caught PLENTY of blues this week. Along with Crabs, Shrimp and some spanish Mac's. For the blues and Mac's I used a Gotcha Plug. The crabs were great tasting! Biggest was around 7 - 7 1/2" I have pic's but was planning to post a "week in review " thread when  i get back home. The shrimp were tasty and fresh!!! great in the pasta.

Blues were in the 3 - 5 lb range. I had one bite through a 17lb leader that was stripping line off of my reel like it was nothing! But the ones we do not see do not count Wink
