WHY,you havn't been impacted down there yet as crabbers, one answer I can give you is if you lie to BP for a claim there is a good chance of going to jail, they have already started investigating fraud cases and one judge has refused to even set bail for two men arrested.

Im glad you know so much about what is going on down in my backyard. The claim i have subbmited is for loss of income due to perception of tainted sefood 6 wholesale dealers canceled orders in the past two weeks due to fear of seaffood.and its only going to get worse. The fourth of july week we usualy sell 40-50 boxes of crab and cant even find a market to buy any.Is that fraud cause if it is then im guilty.all my dealers wrote me letters confirming the loss of sales is due to perception of bad seaffood From the gulf.So is bp liable for that my lawyer bill taylor seems to think so.and thats not all im doing. Im recording my catch every day by video and how many crabs i cant sell. When we get a full box we weigh it on camera. To document what we could catch and what we cant sell.So when the oil does show we will submit a true loss claim. For instance pelican point seafood in the middle of tarpon springs tourist industry bought 55000 dollars worth of blues in the past year since the oil spill they have had to stop carrying blue crab altogether.so the only fraud here is that you rd dont want to stick up for everyone affected by this you should work for bp as representive because you sure do stick up for them.

BS,theres more crabs being sold in this state right now by Fla crabbers than in any of the last 5 years. Most of us are having a hard time catching enough to supply our markets but that will change next Tuesday as it does every year. The only impact from the oil I am seeing is all the seafood harvesters want to draw a BP check and wont work so the trucks are running with half a load or less and may not be able to continue.
I have no problem with some one who is affected making BP pay for it and have worked to make sure they know what to do and where to go and there are plenty of them but I am also surrounded with 2 countys full of mullet, crab, and oyster fishermen who knocked the doors down when the claims center opened up to get their "free" money to not work, they will have a case for losing their markets because others are taking them over.I would suggest you not do any more news interviews as it did not come off very well.

I've sold more crabs this may/june than I have in the past three years. The only times I've sold more was several years back when the Maryland trucks ran down here until the 4th of July. I stone crabbed up thru May 15, had the best spring crawl I've seen in 17 years with decent markets and the best price we've had in the last 3 years.

So let me get this straight, you are catching viable crab but can't find market and that is somehow tied to the oil spill. Please explain.

Like I said how does what you can't sell or find a northern market that needs, have any bearing on the BP oil spill. Please explain how the oil spill has effected the demand for your crabs? If anything.. The lack of competition from states to your west because of bad water and restrictions should be helping you move your product.

Sounds to me like you have been spoiled.
Finding different markets entails more than just posting to old threads on BCA.
There are always bad years, for crabs and/or markets.
Unfortunately not all of us can "put in a claim" to an oil company to make up the difference.

Well a bunch of fishermen were just arrested for fraudulent claims. i guess they said madeira beach wasnt buying fish and it turns out they were the owner bill camedown and did a press conference and said everyone in florida is filling out fraudulent claims. that is the sort of thing i do not condone.

Dale Jarrett's own boat is crabbing every day. I see Dusty out quite a bit. You don't think that the stock market falling 700 pts. in the last few weeks has anything to do with crab sales? Or that there is an abundance of crabs all over the state and all up the eastern seaboard. That .60 er lb for red roe mullet last fall due to the oil spill? don't think so, but it's far below the $2.65 per lb I was paid in 1995, or maybe the $4.50 and $6.50 we started out on stone crabs last season. I've known RD a long time, and as state president of Organized Fishermen of FL. he works selflessly to help all us fishermen. I know that he is as sick of this mess as anyone especially since his area will see oil long before ours will. IMO At this time there ain't an INSHORE fisherman or guide south of Apalachicola that has a leg to stand on as far as an oil claim(unless your sales were from Panama City west to La.) I know it's a trying time and we all stand to lose everything if this curd comes ashore in West Central Fl.(might lose it down the road anyway if the oil or chemicals knock off a few year classes of crab and fish) but fraudulent claims now will only hurt the legitimate ones down the road. My name is Art Cannon Iget the ESF18 updates from the state on the oil 3 days per week, I tried to e-mail them to you last week but yahoo said it wouldn't go thru to yours.

Thanks Art,if he will reread my post he will see that I didn't accuse him but gave him the same advice I have given everybody else going to file a claim, don't lie to those people as it will come back either on the individual or on commercial fishermen as a whole.
What I see going on with all the state and local government pissing away BP's money and all the claims including those who haven't fished in years there will be a point where BP will cut it's losses and BP America will go bankrupt, the parent corporation will go on with business as usual and all of us will have oil in our fishing grounds, shut down and not allowed to work with no compensation for a long time.
As far as not being a help by the time you had found this site and was bitching about the 10 closure I had it in the works already to get it stayed for this year so you could WORK before the oil comes and if after next weeks meeting the stone crabbers want to try to get the season opened early so there will be a season and we can get some of the markets took care of,I will spend what time and effort is needed to get that done.
BTW,in the last 2 months I picked up a restaurant that uses 10 to 14 boxes of mixed crabs a week,a retail market thats taking another 2 or 3 a week and my main buyer increased their order by 200 lbs every week, good crabs at a fair year round price.
