Got out today 5am-11am. Got about 40 keepers, caught about 100 or more all together. Only kept males. Got a lot of pregnant females.  Water was 81 degrees.  High tide was ar 7am.  The 1st 2 hours was non stop, after that it was spotty. Got about 6-7 good size ones too. Lost one trap, one drop line, and 1 pair of pliers......

Just got done making the crabcakes, will be chowing down in an hour or so.  Forgot to mention I saw a lot of dolphine swimming in the river. They came in with tide at 6am and left around 10am.  Looked to be about 20 or so.  Bunch of different pods. Tried to get a picture but hard to time it just right. Was cool to see.....

I have been wanting to try Gloucester Point since I just moved to the area.  Any tips for a newbie to the sport and area.  I dont have my boat yet so I am stuck to handlining and a few traps from shore/pier.  Any info would be great!

They key seemed to be having the tide moving. I got there at 5am and it was steady action til 7am. Tide was high at 7am and it died out there. Picked up again around 10am when tide started to move back out. I don't think bait makes a big difference. I got more action on drop lines than pots. I would get there as early as possible(4am) and stay until 8am or so . Make sure the tide is moving at that time, if not, wait till tide is moving....

Joe,

I think you're right about the tide. We've been a few times this year, and the lulls in the tide corresponded to the lulls in catches.
We caught quite a few soft-shell crabs the weekend of the 14th. Good times, although, I did see several people keeping obviously undersized crabs.
