Hello everyone,

I'll be driving from NYC to Atlantic City early this Saturday morning, and would like to try some crabbing in the area or along my way back in the later afternoon. Any recommendation for a nice crabbing spot from land? Since I have never been crabbing in NJ and it's a family trip (with 2 kids in the group), any place not far from off Garden State Pkwy will be good. Smiley

Thank you and have a wonderful crabbing season.

Rom

Hey Rom,

If you are in the Atlantic City area, there are a number of spots you can crab from shore, but you might have to walk a little.  If you head a little further south of AC (5-10 miles) you'll cross over a good number of tidal creeks.  Most of those creeks will hold crabs, but you have to be willing to walk a bit.

Wehn you exit AC, head south on Route 9 toward Ocean City (NJ).  Route 9 paralells the GSP.  It has a lot of lights so you won't cover much ground quickly, but you will see a number of nameless tidal creeks along the way.  Just find one with firm sod banks and have at it.  Make sure you take along some good bug spray (Bullfrog works well).  The greenheads love the sod banks and are always happy to see fresh meat (aka you exposed skin). Also, the sods banks tend to be muddy, so wear old sneaks and clothes - you'll probably get dirty.

One last tip - be sure to bring something to tie your lines onto.  As you can imagine, the sod banks offer very little structure to tie a line onto, so you'll need to bring your own.  I have found that a pack of long wooden kabob skewers does the trick nicely.  You can pick them up at any grocery store for a few bucks.  Just poke them into the ground and tie your line to them and toss them in the garbage when done.  Makes it easy to locate your lines as well.

Good Luck

Vince
