I'm new to this forum and tried to use the search function but was left just as confused as I was when I left the DNR page. Right now I'm about to put in my application in order to obtain a apprenticeship permit for an LCC. I'm seventeen and I have been crabbing with my father (who holds an LCC) for all of my life. Can I use my experience with him to fulfill part of my apprenticeship requirement and can I continue to go crabbing with him to fulfill my requirement? I just want to do this before it is impossible to obtain the license. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Wink

As for the Apprenticeship.....I thought they shut that down Undecided  If you were already in it then you were good, but they weren't letting anybody else in.  I could be wrong.

If you were able to get into the program your dad would be able to sign off on your hours.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the help. I believe all of y'all, but the thing that confuses me is that I emailed the DNR requesting info for the LCC and they sent me the apprenticeship permit application which included the LCC which you can have up to 50 pots with, right? I guess it is good that I learned about this before I sent in my application for the permit with the 50 dollars. Sadly buying a license is not an option at this point in time. Thanks.

Fill out the paperwork.....send it in with a CHECK for $50 and see what happens from there Wink

to the best of my knowledge the apprentice program is still up and running; they are accepting applications.... but for now they have suspended the issue of LCC.....

AND I do believe you CAN have hours signed from previous work..................

best bet is to call Dianne Samuels

Diane told her everyone on the waiting list is going to get a letter in the mail saying to send back for the permit . I'm just glad i got mine years ago . i can sign her off since i have a tfl .  so yes send the check and app back in .  it takes awhile for her to get it.since it doesn't go directly to her

Baycrabber,
Can you provide a link or some sort of documentation saying that?

This is what I asked Ms. Samuels,
Ms. Samuels,
    I am kind of confused by the FAQ on the DNR website so I am kind of hoping that you can clarify this for me. I have been crabbing with my dad all of my life and he holds the Limited Crabbing License. Can I use my time with him from the past ten years in order to complete my apprenticeship requirement or do I have to start from scatch?

and this is what she replied with,
Yes, you can.  You will need to apply first.

I'm definantly going to put my application and see what happens and long the wait is.

Senate Bill 274 was passed by the 2006 session of the General Assembly and it was signed into law by Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.. Effective July 1, 2006, this bill removes the two year minimum requirement in the program and modifies the practical experience requirements by crediting past experience in certain circumstances. Past experience may apply only to:

(1) An individual that served as a crew member to a tidal fish licensee within the past 10 years;
(2) An individual that held a Maryland Provisional Charterboat permit in accordance with Natural Resource Article 4-210.2;
(3) An individual that held a tidal fish license within the past 10 years and has not permanently transferred a tidal fish license within the past twenty four months;
(4) An individual that held a temporary transfer of a tidal fish license within the past 10 years; or
(5) An individual that harvested fish from the waters of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and landed the fish in Maryland.

My wife got an LCC a few years back and she didn't need the BSC at the time of ENTRY.......If I remember right (It's only been about 3 years Grin)she did have to complete it and a class before she could get her LCC.....she got both "classes" at the Convention in OC....no big deal.

Maryland law exempts a commercial fisherman license holder from the boater safety course even though the apprentice program says you have to take it.

One more time the DNR doesn't know the law.
