Hi All,

Just found this site while preparing for a trip to Corolla and had a few questions... if it's appropriate to ask here...

Been to the Duck/Corolla area several times but never did any crabbing. We're staying in Corolla this time and I see there's a public boat ramp in the sound at Whalehead. Has anyone ever done any crabbing there? We're thinking of taking some canoes/kayaks and giving it a try with collapsable traps.

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to the site!

NC is the largest supplier of blue crab (Yep, even larger than MD), you should be able to catch crabs almost anywhere!

I fish (crab or fin fish) the sound side all the time in my small boat with an electric motor.

Even caught small ones bare handed...the kids get a kick how I let them bite onto my fingers and pull them out of the water.

Be careful in that yak or canoe!
One gets loose in that yak...they don't let go even if you break they're claw off!

Now, how about introducing yourself over here in the General Discussion!

Welcome and good luck!

The Currtiuck Sound is full of crabs, but it's hard to catch em around the shorelines..

Thanks for the replies fellas.

Bone, I understand about the crabs in a kayak. I regularly battle smallmouths, walleys and the occasional musky on the Susquehanna thrashing treble hooks at me after sunset so I'm careful about that kind of thing. Wink

Gene, should I take that to mean we should stick to the open water? And if so, deepest we can find or moderate depth? I understand that whole area is fairly shallow. 3-4 feet?

Thanks again.
