I would love to get a steamer for the crabs I catch. I do not own a burner so the crabs would be steamed on an electric stove. Would it be worthwhile to buy a steamer if I do not have a burner or is there a steamer suitable for a stovetop?

Just buy an enamelware lobster/clam steamer at your local kitchen supply place. That will be suitable for your stove top and be big enough to hold your catch up there on LI.

Ron's on the money.....I have a big enough steamer to fit on top of my stove and I can do a dozen or two...cleaned crabs....with no problem...After the water starts steaming I put the crabs in for a nice steam bath, cover for about 25..30 min......Thats what I do....

Go to Walmart and get a turkey fryer they are pretty cheap and you can steam about a half a bushel at a time

I agree with the big blue steamer/clambake pot but get the one with the rack to keep stuff out of the water and with a spigot incase you want to do steamer clams

Except if you live in a small place like I do...then the "aroma" fills the entire 1st floor. Best to do your fishy stuff outside or if it's too cold out ....do it indoors but turn on lots of exhaust fans.....

Your reply reminds me of my old times in a car which sat in the hot sun the day after before I got in it again.

I've been using an enamel pot for years, and it's ok, but when I get more than 1/2 bushel have to split it up. And the enamel cracks or burns out in a few years. I've always been on the lookout for a stainless steel pot, but didn't want to have to pay the big $$ and shipping, and did not have the wherewithal to make a "home made" one. I was walking around the Asian dry goods store, Hanoori (Rolling road and Rte 40 - you go down stairs to dry goods section), and found the perfect crab steamer. Actually I think the Koreans use this to steam food too, but load it up with smaller trays that fit inside. It's a 80qt, includes the rack which has about 2.5-3 inch legs so you can put enough steam liquid but not boil the crabs. It was $120 for all. there was one larger one there - 100 qt for $150. the store owner said he could get larger if asked. thought I'd pass this on to the forum. I can't wait for next season to try it out! For sizing the pic has included a tennis ball sleeve.

That would be an incorrect statement.
