Last month I spent 11 days in the hospital, in two trips, and had 2 surgeries. Been plenty worried about the risk of infections. If I come down with one, I won't live long enough to pay off the original bill, much less any more  Shocked Cry Cry

I'm better every day.

One of the problems is when you get older, you're dealing with all used parts and some of them have just plain worn out or gotten all discombobulated. My gallbladder and I had an unholy alliance going for 25-30 years until the darn thing broke the truce. The gallbladder and I had our differences many times, but the deal was I'd let it be if it let me be, within what I considered reason. After 6 hours of misery I finally headed off to the hospital.

Now I had studiously avoided all in the medical profession for many years. Blamed it on Caretaker's Syndrome - spent so much time taking care of Old Grouchy, there was no way I'd let them get hold of me. Well, once they got their greedy little paws on me, they decided I'm diabetic and hypertensive. Just great! Oh yeah - and Old Grouchy was given the verdict he's diabetic at the same time. So now we have twice daily finger pricking parties.

We're tough old birds - we will survive. We're going to be mighty poor, but we will survive!

Good idea... is not 50/50 a bit too strong though? I would think 10/90 would be effective.
Only for city boys,we use straight pool clorine for cuts here.

Just saw this post, here's one that I posted from '06 that happened to my dad.  Be warned the pic is pretty nasty.  And, coincidentally, it happened at Goodhands ramp.

You were right to be worried.  We just lost my mother in law to sepsis after she went into the hospital for a biopsy for suspected breast cancer.  Good news no cancer, bad news,  she was gone in 10 days and nothing they could do.

went to the doc[1962] who took care of all the comm.guys in town....i told him i had ''fish poisoning'' because of several small cuts that would not heal.....he said there is no such thing as fish poisoning and what i and many other fishermen come to him with is a form of staph infection.....hard to get rid of and stays in your system...he told me not to rely on bleach, but to use Lysol instead..i soaking my fish gloves in clorox each nite... had another bad instance in the 80's...last month had some moese surgery that would not heal...went back ,they took a couture and sure enough..staph............be careful and try some lysol

SS,I have been using bleach for 30 years,it works well not only to prevent it but to get rid of it after it sets in,that Doc was full of.....we use it around here on anything that doesn't need stitches. If we could get people to take a shot in the arm of bleach it would cure Aids,Herpes, drug addiction, liberalism and a host of other social diseases.   Wink Grin

i am glad it works for you after all those years..i know the environment you crabbers work in and exposure you have for the chance of infection..........only a guy who strings barb wire during the day and empties port-o potties at nite is a greater risk ......  Shocked

Last year, Severn, My sister was swimming off a sail boat and got a puncture wound on her inner thigh from a piece of submerged rebar.  Went to urgent care, they cleaned the wound, stitched it up (found out later that they should nopt have stitched it)  and sent her on her way.  Next day her doctor prescribed anti-botics.  Next day I got a call from her to take her to the hospital.

4 days later after being on intervenous anti-biotics she was released from the hospital.

Most recent up date. The Docs are leaning towards the removal of his leg from above the knee. They (The Docs) are now seeking second opinions as he the patient has agreed for removal if there are no hopes.

This all resulted from a scratch one might receive from a thorn. Totally Unbelievable!

Man, sorry to hear that. Will keep him in my prayers and mention his situation to others that crab and such. Hopefully we can prevent others from getting this.

I know right now I have a blister on my arm that is not healing right. I do not know how I got it. I am going to try some Vinegar on it for the next few days. Vinegar will kill staff infection because staff can not survive in an acid state. Or so I have been told. I have used that successfully for years... or at least when I pounded nails for a living.

We old carpenters were always butchered up back then and I use to Dr. up the guys. Once a guy ran a nail through his foot and would not go to the Hospital so I pulled it out with my claw hammer and dumped Polo aftershave stuff on the cut to kill the infection. He limped for a long while but it eventually healed. I think I killed his right foot odor problem at the same time. I used electrical tape to re-attach another old timers finger that was 30 percent cut off. It healed but was always crooked. We use to laugh a lot about that. Pickle juice will also kill infections.

Good luck to yer friend... It must be tough to loose a limb but much better than to loose yer life. When I had a heart attack I learned that lesson. Life is so very precious.

The leg has been removed from above the knee. Surgeons said it was no longer a choice, it had go go. As of now they think they have stopped the infection and are again optimistic. However optimism has been their outlook from day one. There has been teams of doctors studying this event since he entered John Hopkins Bay-side Hospital about 4 or 5 weeks ago.

This stuff does not give up easily. Let this not be in vain, I only hope reporting this helps someone else prevent this type of happening.

Take even the most minor wound with the up most caution when in or on the water, disinfect it immediately. Any sign of redness, soreness, chills or fever get to a doctor at once. Many doctors can not even know how to diagnose this until it is too late. This bacteria has the ablity to Double ever 20 mintues under the right conditions.

Your odds of contracting it are about 1 in 300,000 which seems astronomical, but I'll bet you play the lottery thinking you can win against even higher odds, don't take the lesser chance to lose on this bacteria.

Thanks for sharing this Keary.  Sorry to hear about your friend's leg.  This is an excellent warning about the little critters in the water, to take sanitary precautions, and to seek prompt medical care.
