I'm a newbie and was checking out topics...I'm so glad I came upon this one.  I am so very sorry your friend has had to go through all of this. I hope that he's been through the worst of it now and that his condition improves.  Many folks on this board are pulling for him.  I am also going to get a bottle of the bleach & water mixture ready for my next trip!

Keeary,

wow sorry to hear all of this... I will keep your friend in my thoughts and prayers... it is amazing to think the outcome from just going crabbing one day and getting an infection from the water.... Like Suzy Q and Old Grouchy I lost my father to Sepsis... he decided to get a knee replacement after years of hobbling around due to falling on the ice and tearing his knee up really bad... after the operation he never got any better and then only started to get worse.... died 9 days after the surgery... never left the hospital..instead went from a normal recovery room to ICU and never left... so I know how serious infections can be... funny thing was they never mentioned he had sepsis on the autopsy.... and he obviously could not donate anything .......  they listed it as heart failure.... yeah caused by the strain of fighting this deadly infection........ but I would much rather have him here and limping around than to have gone through what the family did 13 years ago....these things go on more than you know...so keep the faith...

Chris - it wasn't us who lost someone to sepsis, it was Titan1051. Our hearts go out to his family for the loss of his mother in law. I spent some time in July in the hospital and believe me I was well aware that hospitals are no place for sick people! Fortunately for me I escaped any infection (pretty sure it would have shown up by now, 6 weeks post surgery!)

I had my appendix out back in early September, and about 2 months later, I came down with a staff infection of some sort. At least that's what they thought it was. They were never able to figure it out. I was in the hospital for I believe 4 days waiting for an answer. Never got one.

If we must. laugh laugh laugh You know we just put up with you now because there's no crabbing. It's not like we like you. Well maybe Ronster. laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh So did Vick and Brady get a tee time yet. Go get them bugs, though from what you've been posting, and from what I gathered from reading your posts; now's a kind of slow time? Oh well, hope you feeling better. Come on warmer weather. Grin

We are approaching nearly a year this event took place and the fellow is still having some problems - Please be Careful - especially once the water temps begin to rise - that day surface temp was approaching the 90's.

When I ran my traps last week I noticed a lot of infected areas on my hands.  You can't run 300 traps baited with catfish heads and catch 200 pounds of crabs without getting poked, scratched or cut now and then.  Usually it doesn't bother me but for some reason my hands got infected mighty fast.

Took care of them before things got worse.  Don't know if it was because of the river water or the recent rains that we had.  Either way I was shocked on how fast the infection spread.

Wow just goes to show you it don't matter how clean or dirty you think the water may be it can happen to any of us. My friend was telling me about a guy he used to work w/ and  one time he must have gotten scratched or something from a tree (from clearing some property or something) and got very sick b/c of some type of bacteria. Anyway hope your friend gets better. I think we all can learn an important lesson here, no matter how big or small a wound may be to disinfect it and keep a real close eye on it. Oh and remember to wash or disinfect your hands before eating especially while out crabbing and dealing with raw meat. Good luck to everyone. Please keep us posted about your friend.

So sorry to hear this dp... So scary!

Being a carpenter I'm always banged up on my legs, hand and arms.. Try not to think about it much but when you read posts like this we all must be aware.. I'm a fan of Colloidal Silver and will be packing it for now on  whenver I'm in or near the water.. I really think it could have a profound effect on a flesh eating bacteria.. Stepped on a nasty rusty nail last summer, foot swelled up the next day and went into a fever.. Believe it was tetnus.. Took some silver and just monitored for a few hours.. That night All symptoms cleared and I saved my self a hospital bill..

A neighbor worked in a pond in Mass and later returned home to NC. Within a few days he was ill and getting worse. At age 70 it was a worry. His doctor had tests run. He was sent to Duke -- in the hospital over 2 weeks and nearly died. If not to Duke on time he would not be here. A blood infection. It took months and a relapse before it was totally gone!

My friend lives on the Gulf coast of Northern Florida.  We were visiting and he had a cookout and invited the neighbors and we all went swimming.  The next door neighbor'15 year old son scraped his foot on an oyster shell.  Hospital next morning had his foot removed in the afternoon.  The next day they took up to the knee.  Three days later he passed away, Flesh Eating Bacteria.  That was 6 years ago and my friend that has this beautiful Pier and an unbelievable view but he will not go within 50 feet of the water.  He even stopped cutting his front lawn and let it all grow over.  The neighbors house is still vacant after the parents moved not long after.  We were all in the same water it just picked him...

This is an on going saga. The fellow lost his leg and to date is still receiving treatment. His case is now being taught worldwide. The link below can show you what this bacteria can do.

WARNING IT IS GRAPHIC. These are actual finding and pictures of this fellows trauma.
