5 girls....and who knows, maybe a 6th try

« on: October 14, 2005, 08:13:09 PM »

Hit the wye today.  Didn't rush down due to weather and thought nobody would be there.  Boy was I wrong.  Got there at 7:00 and only about 5 spots left in the parking lot.  When I left they had started parking up the hill.  Got to the spot I wanted to try today and dropped my traps at 7:55.  I went deep at first thinking they would be there with all this rain.  I was wrong.  Ended up moving them in towards shore.  Started at 15' ended up at 8-10'.  Had a few in 6' and a few in 12'.  12' had a better quality crab but much fewer crabs.  The majic # was 8'.  Had a full packed bushel by 11:30 and back at the ramp and on the road by 12:30.  All were 6.5 - 8" and black.  I only caught 3 females today which are still at the wye.  Tide changed at ~9:30 but the crabs never slacked off.  It was steady all morning.

Good job Crabbyd as usual. Well I have plenty of options, still on a mission and I may have to go deep in that spot to clear the wind. I'll give it a shot, can always move back to shallower water. Roll Eyes Wink

Good luck and I'm sure you'll locate them as usual.  Save a few, I'll be back either Mon or Tues of this week.

Great look'n family, Crabbyd. It looks like all are enjoying the wonderful Chesapeake Crab Feast. Nothing else like it in the entire civilized world. That I know of, at least.

Reminds me of a movie on TV last night. Runaway Bride with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Just my wife's cup of tea. Lots of huggin' and kissin'.

Anyway, the point is, the movie was shot in beautiful "Hale", Maryland. And, for a little local color, there was this one scene where they were all sitting around the kitchen table with a humungous pile of steamed blue crabs. Very red by now, of course. Layers and layers of USA Today serving as the obligatory table cloth. All with an appropriately dry California Red!

Watching very intently now, I was anxious to see how the Hollywood types were going to go about demolishing the pile of steaming crustations. It shouldn't have surprised me that not a shell was opened and not a claw was cracked! Heaven forbid that they might get some of that hot Old Bay seasoning on their dainty fingers. They just sat around all cutesy and bubbly - while my own mouth was watering. Figures!

Please do your part to protect the treasured bounty of the worlds most abundant estuary.
