Question,

 Say I am out on the water for what ever reason. Fishing, Crabbing or just taking a boat ride and I see a professional commercial crabber... would it be ok to cruse over and seek to buy some crabs? I am sure I would be willing to chip out more money than what the retailer would pay.... is this sort of thing aceptable or would Johnny law have a problem with it?

I have also wondered the same thing about oysters.

Happens all the time.
I don't know the law on the subject, but if you had a receipt you should be fine.  Or if you had a rec license and were not over your limit you should also be fine. Last year when crabs were a little more scare we had people come over all the time to buy crabs. I've bought oysters after seaducking the same way.

Most guys would be more then happy to sell off the boat since alot of the wholesalers have daily quota's that they will buy and thats it.

 Sure thing,just wait til the boys are docked and cleaned up,and of course happy with the haul.Boys and Girls of course,don,t wanna offend any waterwomen. laugh

Not a problem.  I'd prefer if somebody approached me on the water as opposed to the docks......If I'm at the docks I might need all I have vs. on the water I can make it up.

Just be careful if you buy females...  you'll need a reciept to show you "bought" them vs caught them yourself Wink

because of the law our dnr set.         as far as buying direct from waterman,go for it . it would be a win win. the waterman could make alittle more than wholesale, and you could pick them up for a ton less then the local markets are charging. as far as law the only stipulation im aware of affects the fisherman, legally he needs a vendor stamp as well to sell retail

In Fla it is illegal for the waterman to sell anything unless he has a wholesale and retail license and the retail license has to cover his boat.

I often have people buy from me on poor weather days.  They don't prefer to get soaked but still want to take home some crabs.

Selling crabs straight off the boat is the way to go.  Sometimes, I'd have the boat unloaded by the time I am home.

Wow, Thanks again... Rock fish season is about here and even if i do not have luck there a crab dinner instead would be a blessing... and a crab and Striper dinner would be... heaven itself  Grin
