Hi new to the board and wanted to ask a few questions...I would like to take my wife & 2 boys(10 & 5) crabbing for the 1st time tomorrow and while I do not have a boat I crabbed off piers and bridges when I was a kid with my father and have great memories. I really want this to be enjoyable for them(me too). I was thinking of going to Elk Neck state park and trying to crab off the pier. I have not crabbed in over 15 years now....Is it worth it there or is there a better bridge or pier that would be safe for us...Not looking for a bushel only about 2 dozen nice ones...If you don't want to post it,e-mail address is in my profile...Thanks in advance!!!

I crabbed at the beach area about 3 weeks ago and did very well! I caught 15 in under 2 hours. Just take some line ( i used my fishing poles and necks ) and cast it out aways ( 50 ft or so ) then wait! I was using 3 lines, would walk them non stop and had crabs on each line almost every time! Walk the line out. When you get close to the end pull them up out of the grass and scoop them up! Worked great but i lost the first 2 or 3 getting use to the new crabbing style. It is $3 to get in but it is worth it!

Well...We went and crabbed a couple hours 8 traps but only caught a dozen and 7 were throw backs,so I released the keepers...That being said I need to get a boat cause even at low tide (1:30) a pontoon boat went out and came back at 5 with 3/4 bushel just off land...It was nice hanging around the park as it was a beautiful day..
One guy actually had the nerve to pull his boat up to the dock and go check my traps that were there, really I couldn't believe it. I yelled "hey" at him and he said "he was just checking them to see" Roll Eyes...
Kids had a great time and want to go again. Everyone said it was that day was the worst crabbing in the last 2-3 weeks...So I guess you guys can blame me for trying on saturday!!! I will try to get a boat. Anyone know a place to rent a small boat for the day?

There is 2 piers in Havre De Grace 1) right downtown behind Save A Lot grocery store, by the paddleboat (The Lantern Queen). 2) the other pier is bigger and is down by the lighthouse. Both places are producing good numbers. Good luck and give it a try, the kids will love it.
