I recently read from a prior post that Maryland DNR is randomly issuing warnings and and in some cases tickets for trotliners not having their names identified and/or noted on floats.

          Is this a new regulation?

If so, where can I find it?

The current trotline float regulations state the following;

"F. Float Requirements.

(1) A trotline shall have a float of the same color, size, and shape attached to each end.

(2) Floats that have a round or spherical shape shall be at least 12 inches in diameter.

(3) Floats that do not have a round or spherical shape shall be at least 12 inches long and 10 inches wide."

Rec trotliners don't have to have thier name on floats.  only floats marking collapsible traps.  they have to have the owner's name on them.

Mr. Breeze, I knew pots had too but what confused/concerned me was about trotline floats.  A recent post I read mentioned someone running a trotline being issued a warning ticket for his floats not having identifications on them....Maybe they were confused.....Who knows....

Thanks

Picked up another abandoned trap today - about a 4" piece of blue pool noodle, no name, had a chicken leg bone with some skin still attached to a bungee cord with a zip tie. A couple more and I'm gonna have a table of used crab traps at a flea market.

A couple more and you'll have enough meat for lunch. Grin

This is just this year's version of DNR's annual enforcement of a non-existent law  Angry

It just took a while to surface this year.

It's a [dang] shame that they pick this BS to "enforce"... why would trotline floats need your name?  How drunk do you have to be to return to the ramp without your trotline?  Oh Sh!t!  We forgot 1200' of baited line out there... not to worry, my name is on the float, so whoever finds it can return it to me  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Tongue Tongue Tongue

Meanwhile we have plenty of people keeping females, starting early, taking too many, setting on top of each other... but I'm glad to hear they are cracking down on unmarked floats!   Angry Grin Grin Grin Grin  We should see a huge increase in crab population next year as a result  Cheesy

Mikie,  I see allot of abandoned traps over the season.  Cry  A sure giveaway to me is when the float and/or line is encrusted and encircled with mold and algae.   wall

Seaweed, so are you saying this is going to be a new regulation in 2011?  I agree with you on both points.... thumbsup
Who in their right mind would return back to the slip and leave a 600' or 1200' trotline adrift......  They
shouldn't be crabbing much less boating if this occurs...  Oh [shiz] did we forget
             something....   argue
Way too many females are being kept.  In my view we really need to put a moratorium on the
keeping of female crabs.   stop  This is the existence of the population.

In my view, I would think that DNR would have better things to do then to ticket and/or issue warnings for unmarked trotline floats.  I agree with the trap floats as there are hundreds if not thousands of pot floats in one given area during the season.  But I would really like to see DNR aggressively go after poachers, captain-drunks (navigating under the influence) and hot-doggers not obeying the rules of the road... rifle
