i am a recreational crabber and my girlfriend and i each have 5 traps out in the bay near cortez. I also have 2 blue crab traps out that do great for stone crabs. I hauled in 27 claws that came out to be just shy of 4 lbs yesterday with 1 claw that is over 1/3 of a lb. Was a great day. I am interested to know what kind of numbers and sizes everyone is getting. It was the best crabbing day on record for me. This is my first season hunting the stone crab and i am really enjoying it. Let me know how the crabs are treating you guys. Thanks

Y'all need to try to break the claws a little cleaner,it sould break with a clean "snap" so the crab will survive to grow more claws.

I know it. I feel bad for that. Still trying to get the technique down good. Any tips would be appreciated.

There may be a video on youtube, you have to do it quick, holding the crab while snapping the claw up.

Thanks for the report and pictures. Very nice!
I've got to try that when I get down there. One more year I hope! I don't even know how to measure them. Did YouTube help at all? Listen to R D! He's got the answers!

Last week I threw out some crab traps at my back dock (North Padre Island, TX) and got 7 stone crabs. I didn't even know that there were any there. I know Texas waters are a bit warmer than your East coast, but what months do you guys catch them?

stone crab season is from Oct.16 to May 15. 5 trap limit per person. 1 gallon per person per day or 2 per vessel which ever is less.

In Florida, are you allowed 5 traps TOTAL or 5 traps per species (example: 5 blue and 5 stone)?
