I got a buddy that has access to a boat that is registered in NJ. We want to take it crabbing in MD and start running a trot.

My question is do one of us have to have a crabbing license or does the boat need a crabbing license?  I will be getting a crabbing license this year so I can rent a boat and crab, just not really to sure about the boat.

Also does the boat have to have a MD boat registration?

Thanks in advance Smiley

hi , well you do have to register the boat in MD.
you'll also need a ramp sticker  to use a public landing to put your boat over,
and you can bye a rec. crabbing lic. from wal-mart or any place that sells fishing lic.  be shure to read the rules with that lic. it is different that commiceral crabbing  lic. like the time you can start ect..

I am not sure that you have to have your boat registered in MD...you just have to follow MD regulations...which are a little hard to follow!!

From what I understand, you don't need a license, but you are only allowed to catch 4 dozen crabs...two dozen per person with a limit of two people..does this make any sense??  But in any case, 48 crabs sounds pretty good to me...

Boat does not have to be registered in MD.  If you want to use a 1,200' trot you need a crab license.  Two bushel max if you both have a license.

Hey thanks guys for the info!  Smiley  I made a few calls last week. The boat doesn't need to be regestered in MD, which you guys said. I got the info on acquiring a ramp sticker to get on the wye.

I tried calling DNR over and over and couldn't get a answer to the following:  Does the boat need a crabbing license or do the people in the boat just need to be licensed? I will be running a 1200 trot so I know that someone in the boat needs to have a rec license. But Does the boat itself need a crabing license?

Thanks guys

No the boat does not need a crabbing license. One of you guys just needs a crabbing license to use 1200' trotline & keep 1 bushel of crabs. If two or more people on the boat have a license, you can keep 2 bushels (max per boat).

Hey Crazy Crabber, where the heck you've been hiding?  Gonna try trotlining, eh?  I see you got the bug ever since you went with Keech.

Good luck!

if you ever need to get in touch with dnr, call the maryland state police.
dnr listed numbers will never ever lead you to an operator.
i heard the same recorded message every single number i have callin that dnr has move from somewhere to annapolis, and to hang up and call that number just to get a repeated cycle for the last year and a half.
since dnr is a division of the maryland state police they will give you an operator line (and no you don't want emergency lines  Tongue)
