If anyone hasn't read this book I highly recommend it. An excellent "documentary" of many different styles of crabbing, the habits of crabs, history of MD/VA waters, etc... It is an excellent read. The author is William Warner.

while it's a good book written ages ago it still gives a good insight to a history of watermen and the understanding of blue crabs. Would love to see a contemporay book written now with views of todays watermen and biologists etc.

Read it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Jersey Genesis is a book I would recommend for anyone who enjoyed Beautiful Swimmers.    It's a series of interviews and first hand account stories written in the 40's about the history of the people living and working along the Mullica River in the Pinebarrens in southern NJ.

my old man grew up in south jersey and used to clam in one of the bays/tributaries in his new 1972 boston whaler as a 18 year old...now i use the same boat to run trot line on the severn, with a different engine of course! Awesome boat and glad to carry on a "waterman" legacy

mblanche,

When I was a kid my folks had a shore house off of th Severn on Saltworks Creek.  Primitive as there was no running water and the bathroom (well lets just stay with primitive).  Anyhow, as a kid in the mid/late 70's and early 80's dad and I would run a trotline just outside of Saltworks Creek on the Severn.  Back then it was great crabbing.  Fishing & oystering too.

Beautiful Swimmers is a must read for all MD/VA chimerical and recreational crabbers.  I loved it.

Required reading of course.  Eastern shore and Chesapeake history is good stuff and worth knowing more about.  It will be gone one day if we're not careful.  Books like this help younger folks and 'come heres' learn to appreciate what we have and hopefully treat it with care.

This book, Beautiful Swimmers, should be required reading for anyone interested in crabbing.

I picked it up after learning about it on this very forum.  I had assumed it was a quirky little book, with a narrow scope, written by a crab geek.  Boy was I wrong.  This wonderful book earned it's author, William W. Warner, the Pulitzer Prize.  It is obviously well-written, information-rich and a very easy read.   Although still in Chapter three, I have learned much about the blue crab, it's environment and habits.  I look forward to reading the rest of the book and thank the forum members for recommending it!

I make the kids read the book every year before our first time out. I also introduced them to Ted Lee from Crab Alley who is a descendant to Lester Lee one of the major characters from the book. They don't make Ted Lee's anymore!

Another somewhat similar book is Glenn Lawson's "The Last Waterman" published in 1988. It's about his brother's life as an eastern shore crabber, though I am pretty sure he wasn't actually the last one. Wink

My favorite discussion in the book is the commercial crabbers' opinions of the DNR and the government. Something along the lines of, "Don't think the police can really read them peeler crabs any which way."
