you will have to crab the sound side. problem is most of the land is private, but you may want to do a search for public access on the sound. I know the canadian hole down around Avon is a huge public access area, but a lot of kite boarders and sailboarders use this area.. gets very crowded on weekends...
unless you have a boat to go out in the sound it may be difficult to catch a lot. You may want to go North back up rt 158 bypass past Nags Head to Kill Devil Hills area. go baak up to mile post 8 at the wright brothers memorial turn left onto collingotn road... follow back a bit and it is a windy road and after you cross the first bridge there is a spot toopull off and park on the left and you crab from there.....I have caught lot's of little crabs a few keeper size... but just past this bridge on the collington road is a member from here named Genecrabman. He works out of Endurance seafood... he can hook you up with a half or full bushel of live crabs at a very good price......you could also go back up the the bypass / causeway split... the cause way takes you back towards Ronoake Island towards Manteo and Wanchese.... before you get on the big bridge to go over the sound.. there is a little bridge beofre it.. you will have to turn across the 5 lane bridge and park on the opposite ( left Side ) as you head over towards Manteo. there is public parking ther and short wlak to little bridge. I have caught a lot of crabs there while fishing for percha nd torut etc... on shrimp with my fishing pole.. so a trap or two you might catch a few. Also along the causeway there is Whalebone tackle and a place that rent 14-16 skiffs with motors... if you wanted to try from a boat.....make sure you check the rules and regs for NC before going out and crabbing to avoid using to much or not the correct gear. But if you want some good live crabs at a good price go see Gene....
