I'm looking to get a handgun in a few months. Anyone have any good ideas for caliber and company? I have a 12 gauge for self defense, I just want something to take to the range.
I'm thinking Springfield Armory XD in 9mm.

You can't go wrong with a Ruger GP100. Shooting hot .357s is fun but you can also burn thru allot of .38 and .38 +Ps to save a little cash on ammo. And it will carry OK in the winter when you can wear a coat. Stopping power is awesome...

A Taurus Ulta-lite is a good lower price Subnose. Great for CC in .38+p. And the Ruger single six convertable is a great starter gun. You can shoot .22lr's all day long at close to nothing. It comes with a .22 mag cylinder for extra punch...

WHAT LOAD DO YOU KEEP IN YOUR "DEFENSE" SHOTGUN I got so much 12ga. slug and buck that I don't need anything else.... But... The PDX1 stuff looks good to me.. I think I would go that way if I was buying defensive 12 ga. today... With what I got... I load the tube with a 00 buck. Then a slug, until the tube is full. Course I don't have to worry about over penetrations here. Good thing with the GP100 is you can get a lever action in .357 to back it up. .357 158gr handloads out of a 18" barrel whomps the marsh mud good.  |

OVER PENETRATION IS A BIG ISSUE IN MY HOUSE WITH KIDS , DOGS AND WIFE
LOW BRASS #8 BIRD SHOT IT WILL MAKE HAMBURGER OUT OF A CLOTHED PERSON
WILL NOT PENETRATE 2 LAYERS OF 1/2" SHEETROCK ...............SO IM TOLD

Most LEO dept's went .40 after the 9mm craze past. Good round. No Colt 1911 fans I have one in 10MM and Also a 45acp..They're much safer than a Glock.. Kimber is a 1911 style... I don't own one but put 50 rounds thru one at the range... Loved it... I don't think 1911 styles are safer then the Glocks. IMO, 1911s really need to have special training for CC. |

True... All the reading I've done about 1911s condition 1 sounds safe. But being from the empty cylinder, under the hammer, age... I just can't trust a gun without a transfer bar... Would ya throw your 1911 against a brick wall? I've never owned one. |

Not a 9mm fan either but I am thinking about a 19 backed up by a keltec carbine... I am a total fan of having backups for any guns I own. Ruger Gp100/Rossi lever action.... SKS/mini30 tac... Now I am researching a 19 cause the keltec uses the same mags.... Wish I could find a 7.26 handgun.. |
