North Carolina Did a study about Ghost Pots a few years ago..........There conclusion is Ghost Pots have just as many benefits as they do bad things..Wildlife thrives in these ghost pots..Small crabs and fish go in and out of these things, shrimp feed in them..Oysters attach to them in crazy numbers..In a few years they can even produce a Oyster rock...You guys watch too much Discovery Channel...You sound like a bunch of Tree Huggers.... Roll Eyes

Lets remove the sunken warships and rail cars that we sink also!!!!!!  Oh, wait, they are there on purpose because they promote habitat for marine life.....just like a "ghost" pot promotes marine habitat to support the food chain..   Angry Angry Angry

Everyone I've pulled up couldn't keep anything in them.... In fact, most were just the frame... Cool  My hard crab pots kill more.  Tough on a fish in a pot with a half dozen or more hungry crabs... Grin

generally, one of the two things will happen to a pot. First it will just get so covered in moss/hair or barnacles, it will be virtually impossible for anything to go in or out. Secondly, it will eventually rust apart, time frame unknown however because it might be a coated pot etc. I agree, it's the kettle calling the pot black as we purposely dump ships, trains, bridges etc into places, we never asked to lose a crabpot or two.  Roll Eyes

they studied an area in long is. sound that has been producing lobsters for years even though there are pots everywhere.....films showed the pots where actually a home and a safe haven for young lobsters....they came and fed in the pots and then got out thru the rings...this formed sort of a lobster farm until the lobster got to be legal size.......some states require a panel of sorts on pots that rots out in a short time..

I heard Louisiana was going to implement a bio degradeable section of wire on the trap to allow any incidental catch to escape.  So far nothing has happened.
