I am just about as new as it comes to crabbing.  I have been a fisherman and a duck hunter my entire life, so the water, and chasing things that live around it are nothing new.  I'm planning on making a trip to the tidal James river of VA for some catfishing the second week of march, and I would love to catch some blue crabs.  Do you think I will have a chance to find any active crabs?  What would be my best gear?  I was thinking about putting out a bunch of traps, but like I said, I'm totally green.

Any other tips?

not sure about VA , but MD season dosent start til april 1st..and the crabs wont be seen until around may/june...at least not in the rivers I crab

Best I can find on seasons (which is super difficult on the VMRC site) recreational users can crab year round.  Will there be anything out there for me?

It all depends on how fast the water warms.  Don't expect to catch crabs until the water to about 65 and stays there.

is it just me or do these "starting to get warm days" make time slow down?Huh  i've been thinking about crabs since last fall......slowest winter.....EVER.    Undecided

A good tool to use is going through the old reports & doing a search for the body of water you plan to target.  You can use the dates and reports to give you a feel for when the crabs started running.

just finished dredging for oysters on James River. I can tell you there are plenty of crabs. We caught over a bushel everyday. Water temp is just right for starting. The Virginia season opens March 17. I got my rig ready!
