still seems a little early for up here, this far up in the hudson atleast. We're starting up in just a few more weeks, though.

Hows the crabbing in NJ? You guys start up already down there?

suprisingly, the water temp is still up at just below 60 around the west point area, with all this rain..  Broke 60 in Poughkeepsie as well!!

Few more weeks, can't wait!!

I know a person who sunk a "pot" today. Using bunkers and perch for bait. I'll advise if he catches anything; probably Monday!

Any one hear anything.  Salt line looks way lower than normal for this time of year.

Ok Kids....I'm getting anxious!  Where are the crabs?  Anyway I checked with one of the Northern Westchester bait and tackle shops and I was told that they are getting "a few".  Could this be the start up of the season?  I hope so.  I will be watching for reports ....I think maybe I'll start taking the kids out to stock up on sunnies....been my bait of choice since childhood!  I do have a question if anyone knows.  Does the stinkier the bait the more you attract the crabs?  Someone told be they would live chicken out in the sun for a day to make it as nasty as possible (just before maggots) yuck!  Any truth here?

We generally use chicken legs. Sometimes i'll leave it outside over night, or for the day in the sun. Can't say i've noticed a difference, though. Just makes it smell really bad, and the flies attack you. haha.

I agree: just because they are scavangers, does not mean they eat rotten meat.  Bunker has a strong smell even when fresh, which is probably where the story about "stinky bait" originates.

Went today with dmurph and hxv_vdubb, as planned. We figured we wouldn't catch any crabs, and we were right. haha. Few more weeks, hopefully.

Did catch 2 catfish and a couple perch with rods/reels.

Thanks for the sharing!  We will not rott our meat!  LOL  Anyway my grandfather had always brought me up to catch bluegills...thaw them out the night before and slit their belly right before placing them in the trap.
